Softball Sweeps Doubleheader to Open 2017 Season

TUCSON, Arizona – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team opened the 2017 season with a pair of non-conference victories at the annual Tucson Invitational Games in Lincoln Park. 

BW (2-0) opened the season with an 8-1 victory against NAIA Goshen (Ind.) College.  The Yellow Jackets closed out their opening day with a 13-5 six inning victory against NAIA Bethel (Ind.) College. 

Against Goshen, BW scored on eight runs on 11 hits at plated three runs in the fourth inning and five in the seventh.  The Yellow Jacket defense allowed one run on five hits.

The BW offense was sparked by freshman right fielder Macy Leach (Westerville/Central) as she went 2-for-3 with two runs batted-in (RBIs).  Sophomore catcher Sami Minor (North Royalton) had a career-high tying two hits as she went 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.  Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) rounded out the multiple hit players as she went 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored.   Freshman first baseman Hannah Albrecht (Northridge, Calif. /Chaminade College Prep) and freshman pitcher Nikki Turner (Hudson) each had a base knock and their first career RBI.

In the circle, junior Sam Mott (Frewsburg, N.Y./Central) picked up her first victory in the Brown and Gold as she pitched seven innings and allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. 

In the game with Bethel, the Yellow Jackets scored 13 runs on 16 hits as they scored one run in the first, third and fifth innings, two runs in the second and fourth and exploded for six runs in the sixth inning.  BW allowed five runs on 10 hits. 

The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon) as she went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored.  Sophomore centerfielder Abbie Thompson (Madison) had a career-high tying three hits as she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a RBI and two stolen bases. Albrecht, Turner and freshman third baseman Mallory Swogger (Wampum, Pa./Lincoln) rounded out the multiple hit players with two hits while Albrecht and Swogger each had a RBI.

In the circle, senior Academic All-OAC pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) picked up the victory as she pitched six innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits with one strikeout and no walks. 

BW closes out its Arizona trip on Saturday, March 4 against NAIA Judson (Ill.) University and NAIA William Penn (Iowa) University at 1:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
