Softball Rallies for Rare Tie in OAC Doubleheader with Heidelberg

BEREA, Ohio. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team rallied in the second game of its Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to earn a rare tie with Heidelberg University on the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field. 

Heidelberg (18-9-1, 7-2-1 OAC) won the first game by a final score of 1-0.  In game two, BW (8-15-1, 2-7-1 OAC) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-6.  After three scoreless innings, the game was called heading into the 10th inning due to darkness.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets were held scoreless and hitless while only two players reach base on walks.  The Student Princes tallied one run on six hits as they scored their only run in the sixth inning. 

In the circle, junior Sam Mott (Frewsburg, N.Y./Central) took the loss as she allowed one run on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in the complete game.

In game two, BW scored six runs on 12 hits as it plated one run in the fourth and five in the sixth.  Heidelberg tallied six runs on 11 hits as it scored one run in the first, one run in the third, three runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth.  Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. 

The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore All-OAC right fielder Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) as she went 3-for-5 with a run batted-in (RBI) and a run scored.  Sophomore third baseman Paige Loveless (Mechanicsburg) went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.  Freshman second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon) went 2-for-5 with the game-tying RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning.   Five other BW players tallied a base knock. 

In the circle, senior Academic All-OAC pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) started the game and pitched five innings and allowed five runs (one earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk.   Freshman Nikki Turner (Hudson) pitched the final four innings and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks. 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday, April 13 when they travel to nearby Oberlin for a rescheduled non-conference game against Oberlin College on Culhane Field at 3:30 p.m.  BW returns home on Friday, April 14 when it hosts an OAC doubleheader against Wilmington College at 1 p.m.
