BW Softball Earns First OAC Wins with Sweep of Wilmington

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team won its first two Ohio Athletic Conference games as it swept an OAC doubleheader against Wilmington College on the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field.

BW (9-15, 2-8 OAC) won the first game, 5-1, and captured the nightcap, 4-1.

In the first game, BW scored once in the bottom of the first inning, two in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 5-0 lead. Wilmington (5-23, 1-9 OAC) scored its lone run in the top of the seventh.

At the plate, BW pounded out 14 base hits. Freshman shortstop Alicia Hack (Pickerington/ North) led the way with four hits and was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, a double and a stolen base.

In addition, junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) was 2-for-3 with one run scored, two runs batted-in (RBIs) and a sacrifice fly, sophomore designated player Alex Miller (Akron/ Coventry) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and sophomore right fielder Darcy Daniel (Sandusky/ Perkins) was 2-for-4 with a run scored, double and RBI.

On the mound, sophomore Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) threw a complete-game six-hitter as she allowed one run (earned), struck out seven Wilmington batters and walked just one. She improved to 4-8 this season.

In the second game, BW scored twice in the bottom of the fourth innings to lead 2-0. Wilmington cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Yellow Jackets answered back with two more in the bottom half of the frame.

At the plate, BW had just four hits, but two were big!  Freshman catcher Tori Young (Tallmadge) smashed a 2-run home run in the fourth. It was her second of the season.  Lightel blasted a 2-run shot in the sixth.  It was her team-leading third of the season. 

On the mound, sophomore Samantha Dostall (Oberlin/ Firelands) pitched a complete-game six-hitter as she allowed one run (earned), struck out three and walked none. She improved to 5-7 this season.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Sunday, April 12 when they travel to Hiram for a rescheduled non-conference doubleheader against Hiram College at 12 p.m.   The next home doubleheader is on Saturday, April 18 when the team hosts an OAC doubleheader against the University of Mount Union at 1 p.m.
