BW Softball Earns Sweep on the Arm of Dostall

TUCSON, Ariz. – Sophomore pitcher Samantha Dostall (Oberlin/Firelands) picked up two wins and allowed just three runs in 10.2 innings as the Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept a pair of games on the second day of the Tucson Invitational at Lincoln Park.

BW (2-2) opened day with a 9-0 shutout of Cedar Crest (Pa.) College in six innings and then rallied from four runs down to win a thrilling 9-8 game against nationally ranked Alfred (N.Y.) University in the days finale.

Dostall won her first game of the season as she threw a complete game, two hit, and shutout of the Golden Falcons (0-1).  She then picked up her second win of the day and season as she pitched 4.2 innings of six-hit relief action while allowing just three runs against the Saxons (1-1).  Dostall threw her third career shutout and struck out a season-best six Cedar Crest batters.

The Yellow Jacket offense erupted for 18 runs on 19 hits and was led by the freshman foursome of left fielder Alicia Hack (Pickerington/North), shortstop/center fielder Sierra Bennett (Tallmadge), catcher Tori Young (Tallmadge) and utility infielder Nicole Fletterick (Columbia Station/Olmsted Falls), who accounted for 13 of the 19 hits.

Hack continued her hot hitting as she went 4-for-8 with three runs scored and a run batted in.  Through four games, she is batting .500 (8-for-16) with a double, four runs scored and RBI.  Young picked up her first collegiate hits as she went a combined 4-for-7 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI.  Bennett also tallied her first collegiate hits as she went a combined 3-for-8 with a double, triple, three runs scored and two RBIs.  Fletterick also recorded her first collegiate hits as she went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

In addition, sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference third baseman DJ Rogers (Warren/Champion) went a combined 3-for-7 with two triples, including the game-winning triple in the sixth inning against the Saxons.   Rogers also had five RBIs and two runs scored.   Junior right fielder Alison Fiorucci (Seven Hills/Holy Name) went 2-for-6 and had three RBIs.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, March 10 when it plays a pair of non-conference games against Alfred (N.Y.) University and NAIA Concordia University of Nebraska on the third day of the Tucson Invitational.  The game against Alfred is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. with the Concordia-Nebraska game slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
