Yellow Jacket Softball Drops OAC Doubleheader to Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team dropped a pair of games in a rescheduled Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Marietta College on Marietta Field.   The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 28 but was postponed until this afternoon due to cold temperatures and wind chills.

BW (7-11, 0-4 OAC) dropped a 4-3 decision in the opener and a 7-1 decision in the nightcap to Marietta (10-10, 3-1 OAC).

In game one, BW took a 2-0 lead in the third inning before the Pioneers scored four unanswered runs.  Marietta scored one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.   The Yellow Jackets scored one in the sixth and had the tying run on the third but was unable to push the run across.

The BW offense scored three runs on six hits and was led by freshman shortstop Sierra Bennett (Tallmadge) with two hits as she went 2-for-3 with a run-batted in (RBI).  
In addition, senior All-OAC second baseman Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge), junior center fielder Alison Fiorucci (Seven Hills/Holy Name), sophomore right fielder Darcy Daniel (Sandusky/Perkins) and freshman left fielder/shortstop Alicia Hack (Pickerington/North) each added a base knock.   Daniel added career-high two walks, her first career RBI and a run scored. Hack stole her second career base and added a run scored and a walk.

In the circle, Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) pitched six innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning.  Marietta added a run in the fourth before the Yellow Jackets got their lone run of the game in the fifth inning. The Pioneers closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The BW offense scored the one run on seven hits and was led by sophomore left fielder Mackenzie Nelsen (Powell/Dublin Scioto) and freshman catcher Tori Young (Tallmadge) each with two hits.   The two hits were a career-best for Nelsen as she and Young both went 2-for-3.

In addition, senior All-OAC first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon), Fiorucci and Daniel all added a base knock.  Brua had the only extra base hit in the two games for the Yellow Jackets with a double.  She also scored the games only run on the RBI by Lightel.

In the circle, sophomore Samantha Dostall (Oberlin/Firelands) pitched six inning and allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts.

BW is back in action on Tuesday, March 31 when it hosts an OAC doubleheader against Heidelberg University on the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 3 p.m.
