Bennett’s Five Hits Leads BW Softball to Non-Conference Sweep of Geneva (Pa.)

BEREA, Ohio -- Freshman shortstop Sierra Bennett (Tallmadge) had a doubleheader-high tying five hits, including a career-best three in the first game, as the Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept a non-conference series against Geneva (Pa.) College on the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field.

Bennett had a 3-for-3 performance in the opening game and followed it with a 2-for-4 game in the nightcap.

BW (7-9), who snapped a two-game losing skid, beat Geneva (10-10) in the first game by a score of 5-1 and followed it up with a six inning 9-1 victory in game two.

In the opening game, the Yellow Jackets scored five runs on seven hits and were led by Bennett with three hits.  Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference second baseman Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge), sophomore All-OAC third baseman DJ Rogers (Warren/ Champion), freshman catcher Tori Young (Tallmadge) and freshman designated player Nicole Fletterick (Columbia Station/ Olmsted Falls) each had a base knock. Lightel recorded the lone BW extra base hit as she had a double.  Fletterick, Rogers and Young all had a run batted-in (RBI).

In the circle, sophomore Samantha Dostall (Oberlin/ Firelands) picked up her fourth win of the season as she pitched seven innings and allowed one run on six hits with two strikeouts.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored nine runs on 13 hits and were led by Rogers as she had three base hits and a 3-for-3 game with an RBI. BennettLightel and senior All-OAC first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon) all had two hits. Bennett and Lightel each were 2-for-4.

Junior pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/ Midpark), Young and freshmen Jaki Bender (Wampum, Pa./ Mohawk) and Sarah Stambol (Lorain/ Clearview) all had a base knock. Young blasted her first career home run and had two RBIs.

In the circle, Morgan picked up her third win this season. She pitched six innings and allowed one run on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

BW is back in action on Thursday, March 26 when it travels to Hiram for a non-conference doubleheader against Hiram College on Myrtis E. Herndon Field at 3:30 p.m.   The Yellow Jackets then return to OAC action on Saturday, March 28 when they travel to Marietta for a doubleheader against Marietta College on Marietta Field at 1 p.m.
