BW Softball Drops Two on Final Day of Tucson Invitational

TUSCON, Ariz.  – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team ended its spring break trip to the Tucson Invitational Games by dropping a pair of the games at the Lincoln Park.

The Yellow Jackets ended their trip with a record of 4-8, including a 4-4 mark against Division III opponents.   On the final day, BW lost to NAIA Valley City State (N.D.) University by a final score of 2-1 and then fell to No. 4 nationally ranked Central (Iowa) College by a final score of 7-0.

Against Valley City, the Yellow Jacket offense was held to one run on five hits.   BW was led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference second baseman Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) as she went 2-for-2.   Senior catcher Sami Brown (Kent/Field) went 1-for-1 with a walk.  Freshman pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) and junior first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon) each went 1-for-3.   Morgan knocked in the game's only run for her first career RBI.

On the mound, Morgan pitched six innings and allowed two runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and no walks for her first loss of the season.

Against Central, the Yellow Jackets were held scoreless for the third time this season and mustered four base hits, including pounding out three hits in the seventh inning.  Senior All-OAC designated player/pitcher Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/Field) led the offense as she went 2-for-3.  Sophomore rightfielder Alison Fiorucci (Seven Hills/Holy Name) and freshman leftfielder Sydney Kimball (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) each went 1-for-3.

On the mound, freshman Darcy Daniel (Sandusky/Perkins) pitched three and two-thirds innings and allowed seven runs on 12 hits with one strikeout and no walks.   Murray pitched the final two and one-third innings and did not allow a run with one hit and two strikeouts.

BW is back in action on Tuesday, March 18 when it travels to nearby Oberlin to face Oberlin College in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets open OAC play on Saturday, March 22 when they travel to Bexley to face the Crusaders of Capital University in a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.   The first home doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, March 29 when the team welcomes Marietta College to Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field for an OAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
