BW Softball Swept by Ohio Northern in OAC Twinbill

BEREA, Ohio  – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team was swept in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader by rival Ohio Northern University at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field. The Polar Bears won the opener, 8-6, and captured the nightcap, 11-3, in six innings.

With its losses, BW is now 14-15 overall and 8-6 in the OAC. ONU is 16-15 overall and 9-5 in the OAC.

In the first game, the Polar Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning and one more in the fourth before BW scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-4. ONU added three more runs in the fifth for an 8-4 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the sixth but could get no closer.

The BW hitters were led by junior first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon) who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a two-run homerun in the sixth and two runs batted-in (RBI). Freshman DJ Rogers (Warren/ Champion) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  

On the mound, freshman Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) started and pitched the first five and two-third innings and took the loss to fall to 7-3 overall. She allowed nine base hits, eight runs (four earned), struck out three Polar Bear batters and walked four.  Freshman Darcy Daniel (Sandusky/Perkins) followed and pitched one and one-third innings of scoreless relief and struck out two. 

In the nightcap, ONU jumped out to a 1-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first and BW came back with two of its own in the bottom of the first to tie it at 2-2 and grabbed a 3-2 lead with another run in the second. The Polar Bears regained the lead with a six-run third to take an 8-3 advantage.

The BW hitters were led by senior shortstop Lauren Fecuich (Kent/Field) who was 2-for-3, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, and scored once; and Brua who was 2-for-3 with a run scored.  

On the mound, freshman Samantha Dostall (Oberlin/Firelands) started and pitched the first two and one-third innings and took the loss to fall to 3-4 overall.  She allowed eight base hits, seven runs (six earned) and did not strike out or walk an ONU batter. Daniel replaced Dostall on the mound and pitched three and two-third innings, allowed five hits, four runs (none earned) and struck out two.

BW is back in action on Friday, April 18 when the Yellow Jackets travel to Alliance, Ohio to play OAC-rival the University of Mount Union in a doubleheder at 1 p.m.
