BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Muskingum University on Seniors' & Parents' Day and the last regular season doubleheader at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field. The Fighting Muskies won the opener, 3-1, and the the Yellow Jackets captured the nightcap, 9-3.
With the split, BW is now 18-19 overall and 10-8 in the OAC. Muskingum is 23-15 overall and 12-6 in the OAC.
In the first game, the Fighting Muskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning and add another run in the top half of the sixth to make the score 3-0. The Yellow Jackets put a run on the board in the bottom half of the seventh to make the final score 3-1.
The BW hitters were led by senior shortstop Lauren Feciuch (Kent/Field) and junior second basemen Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) who both tallied one hit.
On the mound, senior Tabitha Murray (Mogadore / Field) started and pitched all seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits, seven strikeouts and one walk.
In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead 1-0 lead after the first inning. Muskingum then tied the game at 1-1 in the top half of the second inning. BW took back the lead in the bottom half of the inning when freshman pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) homered to center field making the score 2-1. The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the third inning on two two-run home runs by both Morgan and Feciuch and an RBI single by Lightel. The Fighting Muskies cut into the BW advantage in the top of the fourth with a run of their own making the score 7-2. The Yellow Jackets added two insurence runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 9-2. Muskingum added two runs in the seventh and ended the scoring for a final score of 9-4.
Morgan led all BW hitters going 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI.
Along with Morgan, Feciuch went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Murray went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.
On the mound, Morgan started and pitched all seven innings allowing four runs and striking out three batters. Murray came in and recorded the final two outs of the game to secure the victory for the Yellow Jackets.
The four-team OAC Tournament Final Four will be played next Friday and Saturday, May 2-3 at the site of the regular season champion.
