Baldwin-Wallace Softball Team Splits Opening OAC Doubleheader with Capital

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split its Ohio Athletic Conference opening doubleheader today (Tuesday, March 29) with Capital University at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field.  The Yellow Jackets won game one, 7-3, but fell in the nightcap, 8-1.  The contest was originally scheduled for March 26 but was postponed due to the temperature conditions.

With the split, B-W is now 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the OAC while Capital moves to 11-5 overall and 1-1 OAC.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored all the runs they needed with a four-run first inning. With two outs and B-W leading 1-0 via a homerun by freshman left fielder Ashley Elber (Huron/ Edison), the Capital third baseman dropped a foul pop fly in foul territory for what would have been the final out of that inning. B-W then responded by scoring three more times for the 4-0 advantage. The Elber homer was the first of her career.

The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 5-0 with a run in the second and Capital made it 5-1 with a run of its own in the third.  B-W gained its largest lead at 7-1 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth before the Crusaders scored their final two runs in the sixth.

At the plate, B-W outhit Capital 15-9. Freshman third baseman Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake) had a perfect four base hits in four at-bats, scored two runs and had two runs batted-in. In addition, Elber and freshman RFTabitha Murray (Mogadore/ Field) each went 3-for-4 and had a RBI. Elber also scored twice and Murrayonce. Freshman designated hitter Justina Wise (New London) and freshman shortstop Lauren Feciuch (Kent/ Field) each had a base hit and an RBI. 

On the mound, junior pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) improved to 4-1 overall as she tossed a complete-game seven innings, allowed nine hits, three runs (two earned) and had four strikeouts.

In the second game, Capital gained an early 2-0 advantage with a pair of runs in the top of the first. The Crusaders added three runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-0. B-W answered with a run in bottom half of the fifth on an RBI single by senior centerfielder Tanya Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland) but the Crusaders tacked on three more in the seventh, making the final tally 8-1.

At the plate, Elber was 2-for-4 and Mullen was 2-for-3 with a double. Capital outhit B-W, 12-8. On the mound,Wise started and took the loss as she went the first five innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits. Senior Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky) threw the final two frames, allowing three earned runs on four hits.

B-W is back in action tomorrow March 30 when it hosts the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University in a non-conference doubleheader at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field with the first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets will then travel to Pepper Pike to take on Ursuline College on Thursday, March 31 in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
