B-W Softball Team Falls to Trine (Ind.), 6-5, in NCAA Regional Tournament Elimination Game

NOTE:   Baldwin Wallace University vacated the results of this event due to an NCAA Infraction.

ADRIAN, MICH. -- The third-seed Baldwin-Wallace College softball team was defeated by fourth-seeded and 24th-ranked Trine University, 6-5, today (Saturday, May 14) in an elimination game at the eight-team NCAA Central Region Tournament hosted by Adrian College at the Adrian Softball Field.

After defeating Bethany (W. Va.) College in their first game, 6-3, the Yellow Jackets fell to the loser's bracket after suffering a 5-4 loss to Hiram College this morning in a game that was suspended from last night.

With the loss, B-W ends the season 28-11 overall and tied the school-record for most wins a season. Trine improves to 29-12 and advances in the loser's bracket to play #19 Alma (Mich.) College in another elimination game today at 4:00 p.m.

After a scoreless first two innings, Trine jumped out to take a 4-0 lead in the third and increased their lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning.

However, the Yellow Jackets would fight back and cut the Trine lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning thanks to four Trine errors. BW held Trine scoreless in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, senior first basemanKatrina Resek (Strongsville) started the inning off with a walk.  Freshman leftfielder Ashley Elber (Huron/Edison) then tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run homerun to straight away centerfield. The homerun was Elber's team-leading seventh of the season.

But, in the bottom half of the seventh, Trine won the game on a bases loaded single up the middle by Haleigh Daniels.

In addition to her homerun, Elber drew two walks and scored an additional run. Also contributing hits for BW were senior Academic All-American centerfielder Tanya Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland), freshman third baseman Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake), junior pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) and freshman shortstop Lauren Feciuch (Kent/Field).

The Yellow Jackets were out-hit by Trine, 12-5 and Trine pitcher Andi Gasco recorded 13 strikeouts. Gasco also helped her own cause with two homeruns and three RBI.

On the mound, Baker started the game and went two and two-thirds innings allowing four unearned runs on five hits.  Senior lefty Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky) then relieved Baker in the third inning and pitched 2.1 innings allowing one earned run on three hits.  Freshman Justina Wise (New London) entered the game in the sixth inning and took the loss after allowing one run on four hits. Wise ended the season with a record of 16-7.
