Baldwin-Wallace College Softball Team Loses Pair of Games to John Carroll in University Heights

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team was swept  by Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University today (Friday, April 24, 2009) at Bracken Field in University Heights.  John Carroll won the first game, 3-2, and captured the nightcap, 3-1.  Despite the losses, senior first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Village/ Elyria Senior) drove in one run in the second game, and moves to within one run batted-in of tying B-W's all-time career mark.

With their losses, the Yellow Jackets are now 22-16 overall and 8-8 in the OAC. JCU improves to 26-8 overall and 12-5 in the OAC.

In the first game, the Blue Streaks to a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning.  BW took a 2-1 lead with two tallies in the top of the seventh, but John Carroll plated two runners in the bottom of that inning to cap the comeback.

Despite the loss and at the plate, Myor (Sheffield Lake/Elyria Senior) had two hits in three at bats.  Five other Yellow Jackets tallied a hit in the first game, including freshman righthanded pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) and sophmore shortstop Katrina Resek (Strongsville), who each tallied one RBI.

On the hill, Baker and took the loss to fall to 11-8 for the season.  She gave up three runs, all of which were earned, on nine hits over her 6.2 innings pitched.  Baker also fanned four batters while issuing on two free passes.

In the second game, B-W opened with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Blue Steaks came back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of that inning.  JCU maintained its two-run lead the rest of the way.

Offensively, junior centerfielder Mallory Kobak (Independence) went three-for-four at the play, including two doubles, her third and fourth two-baggers of the season.  She also scored the Yellow Jackets' only run. Junior outfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/ Highland) and junior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/ Keystone) each had two hits.  Myor drove in B-W's only run in the second game, which runs her career total to 122.  She is only one RBI away from tying the school record of 123, held by Nicole Loudin '06.

On the mound, freshman southpaw Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) started and took the loss to fall to 9-7 for the season.  In six innings of work, she gave up just three runs, all earned, on five hits and struck out three batters.

B-W ends the 2009 regular season tomorrow, Saturday, April 25 at Wilmington College in an OAC twinbill at 1:00 p.m.
