Baldwin-Wallace Softball Team Ends Season with Doubleheader Sweep of Wilmington

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at rival Wilmington College today (April 25, 2009) in Wilmington.  The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 7-2, and captured the nightcap with a 6-5 win.  In addition, senior All-OAC first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Village/ Elyria Senior) tied B-W's school record for most runs batted-in in a career with 123.

The sweep ends the Yellow Jackets' season at 24-16 overall and 10-8 in the OAC. Wilmington is now 9-23 overall and 0-16 in the OAC.

In the first game, B-W gained a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning with a solo homerun by Myor (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Senior), which tied her with former two-time All-American Nicole Loudin '06 with 123 career RBI.Wilmington scored its only two runs of the contest in the bottom of the sixth. B-W came back to tie the game in the seventh inning when junior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/ LaGrange Keystone) scored on a wild pitch. The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the top of the eighth when they scored five more runs and secured a 7-2 win.

In addition to Myor, who was one-for-three, and Coyne, who was two-for-three with two doubles, one RBI and one runs scored, sophomore shortstop Katrina Resek (Strongsville) had a strong outing in the first game. Resek was two-for-four with two RBI and one run scored.

On the mound, freshman righthanded pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/Lake Catholic) started and worked all eight innings to secure her team-leading 12th victory of the season. Baker gave up six hits and two runs and struckout two batters in her efforts.

In the second game, B-W gained a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Wilmington quickly tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning. B-W increased its lead to 2-1 in the top of the third. The Quakers came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth with a single tally. In the top of the sixth, B-W scored three runs, but again, Wilmington matched the Jackets with three runs of its own. B-W plated a run in the seventh and held on for the 6-5 win.

At the plate, junior centerfielder Mallory Kobak (Independence) led the team with three hits in four at-bats, including a triple and three runs scored.  Coyne was two-for-four and added an RBI and a run. 

On the mound, sophomore righthanded pitcher Alyssa Brosious (Westfield, N.Y./ Westfield Academy) started her second game of the season and worked 5.2 innings.  She gave up five runs (all earned) on five hits, and struck out one batter.  Freshman lefty Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) came on in relief to pitch the last 1.1 innings and earned the win to improve to 10-7 for the season.  She gave up just two hits and fanned one batter.

After a 27-46 record over the last two seasons, the Yellow Jackets improved to 24-16 overall this season and clinched its first winning season since 2006.  The Yellow Jackets lose just one senior, Myor, and expect to return 14 players from this season's team for what should be an exciting 2010 campaign.
