B-W Softball Team Splits in Tucson, Arizona; Beats Monmouth (Ill.) but loses to Kenyon

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split a pair of games on the fourth day of the Annual Tucson Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Arizona.  The Yellow Jackets, now 5-3 overall, are currently playing 10 games in five days as part of their annual spring break trip.

The Yellow Jackets opened the day with a solid, 10-3 win versus Monmouth in their first game but lost to Kenyon, 2-1, in their nightcap.

Against Monmouth, B-W scored four times in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. After Monmouth scored once in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 4-1, the Yellow Jackets scored twice in the second and three times in the fourth to take a commanding, 9-1 advantage. Monmouth added runs in the fourth and fifth to close to 9-3 and BW ended the scoring with a single tally in the seventh.

Offensively, junior transfer leftfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/ Highland) was a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base. Junior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/ LaGrange Keystone) had a single, double, triple, scored three runs and had an RBI. In addition, junior transfer CF Mallory Kobak (Independence) had two hits, scored two runs and stole two bases and senior first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Senior) had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs.

On the mound, sophomore Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) started, pitched the first six innings and earned the win to improve to 2-1 overall. Sophomore Alyssa Brosious (Westfield, N.Y./ Westfield Academy and Central School) threw the final frame.

In its loss to Kenyon, the game was scoreless until the Yellow Jackets scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Coyne triple with two outs and then scored via a Lord error. But B-W could not hold the lead as Kenyon scored twice in the seventh inning to take a 2-1 lead and then held off a Jacket rally in the bottom of the seventh to preserve its win.

Offensively, Coyne and freshman pitcher Sarah Baker (Memtor/ Lake Catholic) paced BW with two hits each and Davis and sophomore shortstop Katrina Resek (Strongsville) had the only other two hits. On the mound, Baker pitched well for seven innings as she allowed just five hits and two runs (both earned) to fall to 2-2 overall.
