Baldwin-Wallace Softball Team Sweeps Capital in Bexley and is 6-0 This Week

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at rival Capital University today (April 4, 2009) at the Clawson Field in Bexley.  The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 3-2, and captured the nightcap, 5-0.

The sweep improves the Yellow Jackets to 16-8 overall and 4-2 in the OAC and gave BW a perfect 6-0 record this week, including two shutouts. B-W also swept doubleheaders this week from The College of Wooster on Tuesday (March 31) and versus OAC-rival Heidelberg University on Wednesday (April 1). Capital is now 12-10 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.

In the first game, Capital gained a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning with an unearned run off of freshman starting pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic). B-W came right back in the fourth inning to take the lead.

First, senior All-OAC first baseman Caitlin Myor (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Senior) tied the game at 1-1 with her OAC-leading ninth homerun and 35th run batted-in of the season. Following a walk to junior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/ LaGrange Keystone), sophomore shortstop Katrina Resek (Strongsville) had the game-winner as she blasted her first homer of the season to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 lead. Capital scored its final run, also unearned, in the fifth.

At the plate, junior second baseman Lauren Sabolik (Strongsville) led the six-hit attack and was the only player for B-W to have a pair as she had two hits in three at-bats. On the mound, Baker started and worked all seven innings for her ninth complete game of the season and eighth victory.  Her record now stands at 8-4.  Baker gave up five hits, two unearned runs, struck out three and walked just one.

In the second game, B-W gained a 1-0 lead in the third inning and blew the game open with a four-run sixth inning that was capped by a three-run homer by Sabolik, her second this season.

At the plate, Myor led the way with three base hits in four at-bats, Resek had two hits in four at-bats with a double and an RBI and junior centerfielder Mallory Kobak (Independence) had a pair of hits.

On the mound, sophomore Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) threw her seventh complete game of the season, including her first shutout to improve to 7-4 overall. She allowed four hits

After 24 contests, Kobak leads the team with a .466 batting average (41-of-88) and 27 stolen bases.  Sophomore catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/Medina Highland), is batting .434 (36-of-83) with three home runs, 12 doubles and 32 RBI.  Myor is hitting .430 (34-of-79) with a team-leading nine home runs and 35 RBI.

Baker leads the pitching staff with an 8-4 record and a 2.05 earned run average, has thrown four shutouts and is holding opponent hitters to a .231 batting average.  She has also struck out 38 batters in 78 and two-third innings pitched. Rohrbacher is 7-4 with a 2.11 ERA and has struck out a team-leading 51 batters in 69 and two-third innings of work.

B-W will return to action on Tuesday, April 7 when it hosts Ohio Northern University in an OAC doubleheader at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 3:30 p.m. In addition, B-W also hosts cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University on Thursday, April 9 at 3:30 p.m. and OAC-rival Marietta College on Friday, April 10 at 3:30 p.m.
