Baldwin-Wallace College Softball Team Splits on First Day of Spring Break Trip to Arizona

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split a pair of games in the Annual Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Tournament on the first day of its annual spring break trip.  On the trip to, the Yellow Jackets will play 10 varsity games in seven days. Today (Sunday, March 8, 2009), B-W lost the opener to Wartburg (Iowa) College, 7-6 in eight innings, and won the nightcap, 12-0 against Bethany Lutheran (Minn.) College.

 
Wartburg, 11-1 overall, took a 2-0 lead on the the Yellow Jackets, 1-1 overall, with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. B-W came right back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame to trail 2-1. Wartburg then scored twice in each the fifth and seventh innings to lead 6-1. Undaunted, the Jackets scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6 and force extra innings. Wartburg then scored once in the eighth to claim the win.
 
Offensively, junior leadoff hitter and centerfielder Mallory Kobak (Independence) led the way with three hits, including a triple and a run scored.  On the mound, sophomore lefthander Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) went the distance and suffered the loss.
 
In its whitewash of Bethany Lutheran, B-W took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, increased its lead to 4-0 with a pair of scores in the second and another in the third, made it 7-0 with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth and put the game away with a five-run seventh.
 
Offensively, Kobak stayed hot and was four-of-four with two runs scored, five stolen bases and a run batted-in and sophomore Alyssa Brosious (Westfield, N.Y./ Westfield Academy and Central School) came off the bench to go two-of-two with a run scored and three RBI.  Freshman righthander Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) started and earned the win on the mound.
 
The Yellow Jackets are back in action in Tucson tomorrow when they play Northwestern (Iowa) at 1:00 p.m. EST and then plays St. John Fisher (N.Y.) at 3:30 p.m. EST.  St. John Fisher gave Wartburg its only loss so far this season.
