BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team lost a doubleheader to host Mount Union College today (Saturday, March 28, 2009) at the 21st Street Field in Alliance. The Purple Raiders won the first game, 1-0, with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and captured the nightcap, 3-0. This was the OAC opener for both teams.

 

With its two losses, B-W falls to 10-8 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.  With its sweep, Mt. Union improvess to 14-6 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.

 

Offensively in the first contest, B-W only had a pair of hits as junior leftfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/ Highland) and sophomore shortstop Katrina Resek (Strongsville) each had one. Resek doubled to open the top of the seventh with the score tied at 0-0, but BW failed to move her home.  On the mound, freshman Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) took the loss on the mound and fell to 5-4 overall.

 

In the second game, the Raiders scored once in the first, once in the fourth and for the final time in the sixth en route to shutting out the Yellow Jackets for the second straight game.

 

Offensively, BW was led by Saunders with three hits in four at-bats and Resek, junior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/ LaGrange Keystone) and junior CF Mallory Kobak (Independence) each had a hit. Mt. Union outhit B-W, 7-6.  On the mound, sophomore Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) pitched six innings, allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) and struck out three and did not allow a walk. Despite the effort, she fell to 4-4 overall.

 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Monday, March 30 when they travel to Wooster for a non-league doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. The next home doubleheader is on Wednesday, April 1 when BW hosts Heidelberg College at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 3:30 p.m.
