Men’s Tennis Sweeps Season Opening Saturday Doubleheader

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team won both matches in their seaon opening Saturday doubleheader against non-conference opponents Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) College and Franciscan University of Steubenville by final scores of 8-1 and 54-, respectively.

With the two wins, BW opens their season with a 2-0 overall record. These games also opened the new era of Yellow Jackets men's tennis as six freshmen were started in the matches.

Match 1

BW started the day with an 8-1 victory over Washington and Jefferson. The Yellow Jackets were able to take two out of three in doubles play. The duo of freshmen Matt McGee (Ottawa Hills) and junior Trey Kernan (Penfield, N.Y.) took the win in No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-1. This win was the first in McGee's collegiate career. Then in No. 2 doubles the freshmen duo of Tyler Perkins (Geneva) and Caleb Reed (Wilmington) each earned their first collegiate win by a score of 8-1. This gave BW a 2-1 lead after doubles.  

BW didn't slow down in singles, taking all six matches. Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC Anthony Tosatto (Creston/Norwayne) won in the No. 4 spot by scores of 6-4 and 6-0. McGee and freshmen Aidan Hicks (Oneida, N.Y.), Jack Hindman (Avon) and Adam Zeidler (Bay Village/Bay) all won by scores of 6-0 and 6-0. Hicks, Hindman, and Zeilder each earned their first collegiate victory with their wins. Kernan also gained a victory in singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-1 in the No. 2 spot. 

Match 2

The Yellow Jackets pulled off a close 5-4 victory against Franciscan in their second match of the day. 

The No.1 doubles group of McGee and Kernan once again opened the match with a victory by a score of 8-5. The No. 3 doubles group of Tosatto and Hicks picked up the second doubles victory for BW in this match. The Barons were able to take one doubles match, as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead into singles play. 

McGee continued his great day sweeping the No.1 singles spot with scores of 6-3 and 6-2. Zeidler picked up his second singles win on the day in the No. 6 spot winning in two sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. In the final match of the day for BW, Kernan secured a win in the No. 2 spot in three sets after winning by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 win. After a long day, the captain was able to hold strong and pull out the thrilling and decisive victory,

BW return to action on Saturday, September 18 when it travels to New Wilmington, Pa. to take on Westminster College at 12:00 p.m. on the Titan's Tennis Courts.
