No. 19 Baseball Team Opens With a Pair of Losses to LaRoche (Pa.)

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania --  The 19th-ranked (D3baseball.com poll) Baldwin Wallace University baseball team dropped a pair of games to LaRoche (Pa.) College, 2-1 and 6-1, at Ross Memorial Park at Washington & Jefferson College Saturday evening.

In the first game, BW opened the scoring with a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead when senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference pitcher/ infielder/ outfielder Mark Zimmerman (Akron/ Green) doubled home sophomore catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/ Jonathan Alder).  LaRoche tied the game with an unearned run in the fourth and scored the decisive unearned run via an error and a game-winning single in the bottom of seventh inning.

On the mound, Zimmerman pitched six innings, gave up eight hits and one unearned run and struck out six. Senior Brandon Cichocki (Walled Lake, Mich./ Central) pitched the fateful seventh inning, allowed one hit and an unearned run.

In the nightcap, LaRoche scored three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth and outhit BW, 12-9.  The Yellow Jackets scored their lone run in the sixth on a solo home run by Zimmerman.  He also led all BW hitters by going 2-for-3.

Senior Alex Albright (North Royalton) started and pitched four-plus innings, allowed six hits and four earned and struck out two in taking the loss. He was followed to the mound by senior Connor Murphy (Westford, Mass./ Westford Academy) in the fifth, senior Tom Loeffler (Shaker Heights) and senior Paul Szabo (Richmond Hts./ NDCL) pitched the sixth and freshman Danny Cody (Brecksville/ Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) pitched the seventh.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action next weekend, February 27-28 when they travel to Danville, Kentucky to play Wheaton (Ill.) College in a single game on Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader on Feb. 28 versus host Centre College at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The annual spring break trip south is from March 5-12. BW will play a single game versus Anderson (Ind.) University in Louisville, Kentucky and then play six games in the State of Texas.

The northern schedule begins with a three-game set at LaRoche (Pa.) on March 19-20 and then the single game home opener on March 23 versus Ohio Wesleyan University at Fisher Field at 4 p.m. The 2016 OAC schedule begins two days later with a doubleheader at OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University.
