Volleyball Holds Off Crosstown Rival Case Western Reserve in Highly Contested Match

CLEVELAND – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team kept its winning streak alive as it needed four sets to defeat crosstown rival Case Western Reserve University in a non-conference match inside the Veale Center 

BW (14-0), who won its third straight match against its crosstown rival, took the match by scores of 26-28, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-18. Case Western Reserve (8-4) had its three-match winning-streak snapped. 

Offensively, junior two-time first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference outside hitter Alicia Lortcher (Norwalk) led the attack with match-high and season-best 21 kills.  Senior All-OAC right side hitter Ellen Hawkins (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) hammered down a season-high 12 kills and freshman utility player Alexis Garrett (Mentor) contributed a career-best tying seven kills. Freshman setter Kathleen Egan (Cleveland/Beaumont) set up the offense with a match-high and career-best 53. 

Defensively, freshman libero Sarah Reinhard (Willoughby/South) anchored the back line with a match-best 17 digs.  Lortcher tallied 14 digs while Egan notched a career-high 12 digs. and freshman defensive specialist Jasmine Hromada (Lorain/Elyria Catholic) added 11 digs.

At the net, freshman middle hitter Jessica Whitehead (Wyoming, Mich.) recorded a career-best and match-high 10 blocks. Hawkins finished with season-best four blocks and freshman middle hitter Taylor Brown (Maple Heights) tallied a career-high four blocks.  Lortcher and Egan each recorded a season-best tying three blocks.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday and Saturday, September 22 and 23 when they host the annual Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and Ohio Athletic Conference Crossover.  Friday's matches begin at 2 p.m. with Saturday's matches slated to start at 10 a.m.
