Volleyball Knocks of Penn State Behrend in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team won its fifth straight match and won its home opener with a straight victory against Penn State Behrend College in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center

BW (5-0), who was the tournament champion at last weekend's Bearcat Challenge hosted by St. Vincent (Pa.) College, defeated the Lions by scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-15
 

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference outside hitter Alicia Lortcher (Norwalk) with a game-high 12 kills.  Junior outside hitter Ellen Hawkins (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) added a season-high 11. 

Freshman setter Shannon Ott (Milan/Edison) and sophomore Ashley Nuding (Perrysburg/Springfield) set up the offense with 18 and 15 assists.

On the defensive side, senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC libero Arlayna Newcomer (Norwalk/St. Paul) and Lortcher tallied 19 and 13 digs.

BW is back in action on Friday and Saturday, September 9 and 10 when it co-hosts the 18th annual Marcia French Memorial Invitational with Case Western Reserve University.   The Yellow Jackets opens the invitational with matches against Defiance College and Bethany (W. Va.) College on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
