Volleyball Notches Four Set Victory Against Franciscan

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team got back on the winning track as it earned a four set victory against Franciscan University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center

BW (9-1), who suffered its only loss to nationally ranked Berry (Ga.) College last Saturday, won by scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 24-26 and 25-12.  Franciscan (2-7) snapped a two-match winning streak.

Junior outside hitter Ellen Hawkins (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) led the Yellow Jacket offense with a match-high 15 kills.  Senior middle hitter Nikolette Scruggs (Barberton) and freshman outside hitter Allyson Smith (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) each record 11 kills while freshman outside hitter Anna Anikienko (LaGrange/Keystone) contributed a career-high six kills.  The kills for Smith and Anikienko were a career-best.

Freshman setter Shannon Ott (Milan/Edison) set up the offense with 38 assists. 

Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC libero Arlayna Newcomer anchored the defense with a match-high 21 digs.  Hawkins tallied a career-best 12 digs while sophomore setter Ashley Nuding (Perrysburg/Springfield) added 11.


BW is back in action on Friday and Saturday, September 16-17 when it travels to Rochester, New York to compete in the St. John Fisher College Tournament.  The Yellow Jackets play Buffalo State (N.Y.) University and St. John Fisher on Friday.  BW closes out the tournament with matches against Alfred (N.Y.) University and Allegheny (Pa.) College.

The Yellow Jackets return to the friendly confines of the Ursprung Gym on Tuesday, September 21 when they host cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at 7 p.m.
