NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team swept a pair of matches on the final day of competition at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and Ohio Athletic Conference Cross Over hosted by Muskingum University on Performance Court.
BW (17-3) opened the final day with a three-set victory against Defiance College by scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-12. The Yellow Jackets closed out the last day of competition with a three-set victory against Mount St. Joseph University by scores of 25-10, 25-22 and 25-7.
Freshman outside hitter Morgan Thomas (Northfield/Nordonia) sparked the offense with 25 kills, including a match-high 14 against Defiance. Freshman outside hitter Alicia Lortcher (Norwalk) had 24 kills, including 13 against Defiance. Thomas and Lortcher each had a match-high tying 11 kills against Mount St. Joseph. Lortcher leads the OAC in kills with 242 and Thomas is second with 201.
Freshman setter Ashley Nuding (Perrysburg /Springfield) set up the offense 77 assists, including match-high 44 assists vs. Defiance. Nuding leads the OAC and is seventh in Division III in assists with 712.
Junior All-OAC defensive specialist Arlayna Newcomer (Norwalk/St. Paul) had a 49 digs, including a season-best 25 against Mount St. Joseph. Lortcher had 26 digs, including 14 against Mount St. Joseph. Freshman libero Brittany Miner (Canton/Massillon Perry) had nine digs on the day but still leads the OAC in digs with 347.
Junior middle hitter Nikolette Scruggs (Barberton) was named to the all-tournament team.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action and open Ohio Athletic Conference action on Saturday, October 3 when they host Muskingum in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 1 p.m.
