Volleyball Continues Winning Ways on Day One of French Invitational

BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team continued its winning streak as it won a pair of matches on the first day of competition at the 17th Annual Marcia French Memorial Invitational in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (7-1), who won their seventh straight match, opened the invitational with a three-set victory against Westminster (Pa.) College by scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-10.   The Yellow Jackets ended the first day of action with a three-set victory against Franciscan University by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-17.

The BW offense was led by freshman outside hitter Morgan Thomas (Northfield/Nordonia) with 26 kills.  Freshman outside hitter Alicia Lortcher (Norwalk) recorded 23 kills.  Senior outside hitter Anna Miley (West Salem/Northwestern) tallied 15 kills, including a season-best nine against Westminster.  Junior middle hitter Nikolette Scruggs (Barberton) contributed 14 kills, including a career-high tying nine against Franciscan.

Freshman setter Ashley Nuding (Perrysburg /Springfield) set up the offense with 78 assists, including a career-high 40 against Westminster.  Nuding also contributed two service aces.

Freshman libero Brittany Miner (Canton/Massillon Perry) anchored the defense with 61digs, including a career-best 31 against Franciscan.  Nuding recorded 18 digs, including a career-high 10 against Franciscan.  Lortcher tallied 15 digs while junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference libero Arlayna Newcomer (Norwalk/St. Paul) had a season-best 10 against Franciscan. 

In addition, Scruggs had nine digs and nine blocks to help the defensive effort.

BW closes out the French Invitational on Saturday, September 12 with matches against Buffalo State (N.Y.) University at 10 a.m. and Thiel (Pa.) College at 12 p.m.
