CLEVELAND -- The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team won a five set non-conference dual match against cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University in the Horsburgh Gymnasium inside the Veale Center
BW (14-2) snapped its nine-match losing skid to Case Western Reserve (10-1) and ended the Spartans 10-match winning streak. The Yellow Jackets last defeated Case Western Reserve on September 13, 2006 when they posted a three-set victory in Horsburgh Gymnasium.
BW defeated the Spartans by scores of 34-32, 14-25, 25-18, 23-25 and 15-7. The Yellow Jackets have now played five sets in two of its 16 matches while the other 14 were decided in three sets.
Freshman outside hitter Alicia Lortcher (Norwalk) sparked the offense with a career and match-high 26 kills. Freshman outside hitter Morgan Thomas (Northfield/Nordonia) tallied 16 kills and junior middle hitter Nikolette Scruggs (Barberton) recorded a career-best 14 kills and had one service ace.
Freshman setter Ashley Nuding (Perrysburg /Springfield) set up the offense with a career and match-high 61 assists.
Freshman libero Brittany Miner (Canton/Massillon Perry) anchored the defense with 33 digs. Lortcher had 17 digs while junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference defensive specialist Arlayna Newcomer (Norwalk/St. Paul) tallied a season-high15 digs. Nuding contributed a career-best 11 digs.
Also on the defensive side, freshman middle hitter Lauren Gehring (Wadsworth/Norton) recorded a career-high nine blocks while Scruggs tallied a career-best seven and Thomas had a career-high five.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Friday and Saturday, September 25 and 26 when they travel to New Concord to compete in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and Ohio Athletic Conference Cross-Over hosted by Muskingum University on Performance Court.
BW opens the tournament on Friday with matches against Hanover (Ind.) College at 3 p.m. and Transylvania (Ky.) University and 7 p.m. The Yellow Jackets close out the tournament on Saturday with matches against Defiance College and Mount St. Joseph University at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
