BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team fell to 10th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association poll) University of Mount Union in straight sets, 3-0, tonight (Tuesday, October 23, 2012) in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. The scores of the match were 25-18, 25-20 and 25-18.
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets snapped a three-match winning streak and fell to 12-16 overall and 4-4 in the OAC. With the victory, the Purple Raiders clinched the top-seed in next week's OAC Tournament, claimed at least a share of the OAC regular season crown and improved to 21-5 overall and 8-0 in the OAC.
BW was led offensively by senior All-OAC outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor/Lake Catholic) with a match-high 13 kills. In addition, senior All-OAC middle hitter Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/Holy Name) added seven kills. Junior setter Emily Nagle (Columbia Station/Columbia) set up the offense and had a match-best 29 set assists.
Defensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior libero Natalie Emmons (Ashland) with a match-high tying 28 digs. Junior outside hitter and defensive specialist Taylor Burns (Tiffin/Fostoria St. Wendelin) added 14.
Mount Union was led by sophomore right side hitter Nicole Snyder with 11 kills and sophomore outside hitter Mel Patterson contributed 10. Freshmen setter Kristen Kayser set up the offense with 20 set assists. Senior defensive specialist Kristen Gromes anchored the Purple Raider defense with a match-best tying 28 digs.
The Yellow Jackets close out the regular season on Saturday, October 27 when they host Marietta College on Seniors' and Parents' Day at 12:00 p.m.
