BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 3-2, tonight (Tuesday, October 26, 2010) in an OAC match in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The Yellow Jackets won by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, and 15-10.
B-W improves to 19-12 and 4-4 in the OAC while JCU is now 15-13, 3-5 OAC. In addition, the Yellow Jackets are now 7-0 in five-set matches in 2010.
Leading the way up front for the Yellow Jackets were sophomore middle hitter Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/Holy Name) with 15 kills. Junior outside hitter Chelsea Nissen (Wiliston/Genoa) had 11 kills and freshman MH Colleen Bonacci (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) also tallied 11 kills.
Senior setter and co-captain Casey Passen (Ashville/Teays Valley) led the team with 26 set assists and sophomore Jessica Stitts (Eastlake/North) contributed 17 assists. Sophomore libero and co-captain Natalie Emmons (Ashland/Senior) led the defense with 28 digs while freshman OH Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) had 23 digs and also racked up eight kills. Freshman OH/defensive specialist Taylor Burns (Tiffin/Fostoria St. Wendelin) had 16 digs.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday October 30 when they host OAC rival Muskingum University on Seniors' and Parents' Day in Ursprung at 1:00 p.m. B-W will honor its two seniors, Passen and defensive specialist Rebecca Pittenger (Alliance/Senior) as they play their final home regular season match in the Brown & Gold.
JCU was led in kills by Kerry Fox with 10. Meredith McDiarmid led the Blue Streaks with 36 set assists and 17 digs.
