Gallavan Wins Title and Winters Sets School-Record on Day 2 of NCAA Championships

WAVERLY, Iowa –  Senior outdoor All-American Kim Gallavan (Auburn Township/Kenston) won the national championship in the shot put and senior six-time outdoor All-American mulit-event athlete Melanie Winters (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) set the school-record in the 100-meter hurdles to lead the Baldwin Wallace University women's track and field team on the second day of competition at the three day NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Wartburg College inside the Walston-Hoover Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets are currently tied for second of 72 teams with 18 points.   

Gallavan, who also won the indoor national title in the shot put, won the outdoor event on her final throw of the competition with a mark of 47 feet and 9.75 inches.   She won the event by one and a quarter inches.  Gallavan's previous best finish in the outdoor shot put was 21st at the 2014 national meet. 

Winters qualified for the 100-meter hurdles in a school-record and Walston-Hoover Stadium-record time of 13.99 seconds.  She finished tied for 13th in the high jump with a mark of 5'3.75".

Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and indoor All-American jumper Erin Kasper (Amherst/Marion L. Steele) did not record a high jump mark in her first national outdoor meet appearance. She placed sixth indoors and was a member of the Div. III national championship squad.

Four Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, May 28 on the third and final day of competition.  Winters will compete in the 100-meter hurdles at 3:00 p.m. and the 200-meter dash at 4:50 p.m.  Gallavan and senior All-OAC thrower Maggey Urban (Cleveland/St. Joseph Academy) will compete in the hammer throw at 12:30 p.m.   Senior All-OAC and indoor All-American thrower Tyler Burdorff (Painesville/Riverside) will compete in the hammer throw at 3:30 p.m.
