Women's Track and Field Team Competes at Two Last Chance Meets

BEREA, Ohio – Select members of the Baldwin Wallace University women's outdoor track and field teams competed at the Gregory Invitational hosted by North Central (Ill.) College and Great Lakes Elite Meet hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.  Both meets are considered last chance meets for the BW individuals to improve upon or hit the qualifying marks for the NCAA Division III National Championships.

The Yellow Jacket sent five women competitors to Naperville, Illinois to compete at the Gregory Invitational inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. BW also sent four women competitors to Delaware, Ohio to compete at the Great Lakes Elite Meet on the George Gauthier Track.

At the Gregory Invitational, the Yellow Jacket were led by senior five-time All-American multi-event athlete Melanie Winters (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls)   placed first in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet 10.75 inches, 100-meter dash with a career-best tying time of 12.21 seconds and 200-meter dash with a time of 24.71 seconds. Winters currently stands tied for second in the high jump in the country, third in the long jump, 18th in the 100-meter and sixth in the 200-meter.

In addition, senior sprinter Kelsey Nemeth (Medina) finished sixth in the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 12.82 seconds. Junior Academic All-OAC hurdler Lyndsey Armstrong (Ashtabula/Geneva) finished ninth in the 100-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 15.58 seconds. Freshman sprinter Grace Nemeth (Medina) finished 10th in the 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 12.85 seconds. Junior Academic All-OAC multi-event athlete Rachel Holowecky (Amherst/Firelands) finished 13th in the 100-meter prelims with a career-best tying time of 13.11 seconds.

In relay action, the 4x100-meter team of Kelsey Nemeth, Grace Nemeth, Holowecky and senior five-time All-American multi-event athlete Winters finished third with a time of 48.32 seconds.

At the All-Great Lakes Elite, BW was led by senior outdoor All-American Kim Gallavan (Auburn Township/Kenston) as she finished first in the hammer throw with a career-best mark of 187'1'', third in the shot put with a season-best mark of 45'1.7'' and fourth in the discus with a mark of 138'07''.  At this point in the country she holds the second best throw in the hammer, seventh in the discus and 11th in the shot put.

In addition, junior All-OAC thrower Kasey Clouse (Norwalk/Western Reserve) was first in the discus with a career-best throw of 148'9'' and seventh in the shot put with a mark of 39'0.5''. The career-best throw in the discus moves Clouse up to the 16th best mark on the qualifying list. Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC jumper Erin Kasper (Amherst/Firelands) finished second in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet 2.6 inches and eighth in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet 11.25 inches. Kasper is 20th in the country in the high jump. Senior All-OAC thrower Maggey Urban (Cleveland/St. Joseph Academy) placed fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 176'5'' and 13th in the discus with a throw of 105'6''.

BW is back in action on Thursday, May 26 through Saturday, May 28 when both teams travel to Waverly, Iowa to compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships hosted by Wartburg College.
