Women’s Tennis Ends Season in OAC Tournament with Loss to Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The fifth-seeded Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team ended its 2017 season as it fell to fourth-seed Otterbein University in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal match by a final score of 5-0 on the Otterbein Tennis Courts.

In the OAC Tournament, all matches are ended when the winning team reaches five team points regardless of the current progress of other matches still on court.   Each match will start with the three doubles matches and will continue with singles action until the winning five points are obtained.

Otterbein (13-5) advances to the OAC Tournament semifinals and will face the top-seed John Carroll University on Friday, May 5 at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason at 4:30 p.m.   BW (8-13) ends its season.  

The Cardinals won all three doubles matches to take the early 3-0 lead.  Senior Academic All-OAC player Claire Watts (Medina/Highland) and freshman Emily Dahnert (Charlottesville, Va. /The Covenant School) at second doubles and junior Kelly Peskura (Strongsville) and Shannon Finkenthal (Beachwood) at third doubles each lost by a score of 8-4.

In singles action, Otterbein secured the final two points with victories at first and sixth singles. Finkenthal lost at sixth singles by identical scores of 6-2.   Sophomore All-OAC player Imani Robinson (Cincinnati/School for Creative and Performing Arts) ended the match as she fell at first singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

All the other matches were in the second set when the match went final.  Peskura was leading her match at fifth singles by a scores of 6-1 and 5-1 and was up 40-love for the final point when the match was called.

The OAC Championship will be contested on Saturday, May 6 with the winners of Friday's semifinal matches facing off at the Linder Family Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
