Women's Soccer Announces 2016 Award Winners

BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team announced its 2016 award winners at its annual team banquet. 

Senior All-American and Ohio Athletic Conference Defender of the Year Kelly Gough (Hudson) earned the Most Valuable Player award, sophomore All-OAC forward Rachel Bender was named the Offensive Player of the year and junior All-OAC Academic defender Lauren Haynam (Minerva) was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year. This year, Gough started all 22 games and scored a career-high tying four goals for eight points. Bender led the Yellow Jackets in points (48), goals (19) and assists (9) in her second season. Haynam started in 21 games and had one assist for one point this season. 

In addition, freshman goalkeeper Sophia Weidner (Medina) was named the Rookie of the Year and freshman forward Leaya Armstead (New Albany/Gahanna Lincoln) earned the Players Player honor. In her first season, Weidner started in 15 games, made 90 saves and finished the year with a 1.19 goals against average. Armstead appeared in 10 games in her first season in the brown and gold.
 
BW finished the year with an overall record of 12-9-1 and an OAC mark of 5-4. The Yellow Jackets advanced to the OAC Tournament semifinals for the third consecutive year.
