Women’s Soccer Falls in Overtime at Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio— The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team was defeated, 3-2, in overtime by Otterbein University in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on inside Memorial Stadium.

Sophomore All-OAC forward Rachel Bender (Massillon/Massillon Jackson) and senior All-OAC defender Kelly Gough (Hudson) each scored for BW (10-7-1, 4-3 OAC).

Senior forward Erica Meier scored the game winning goal for Otterbein (9-5-1, 4-3 OAC). Along with Meier, senior forward Madison Burchfield scored two goals for the Cardinals.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead when sophomore Bender netted an unassisted goal at the 5:04 mark. The Cardinals answered Bender's 17th goal of the season when Burchfield headed in a corner kick from freshman forward Holly Bernhold in the sixth minute. In the final minute of the first half Gough almost gave BW the lead before the half as she banged a shot off the crossbar.

In the second half, Burchfield gave Otterbein a 2-1 lead as she netted her second goal of the game off a pass from senior forward Erica Meier at the 60:04 mark. The Yellow Jackets tied the game up at 2-2 when Gough headed in the equalizer off a free kick from freshman midfielder Kenna Poptic (Dublin/Jerome) for her first career assist in the 75th minute. Despite several chances for both teams at the end of regulation the game went into overtime.

In overtime, Meier scored the game winner for the Cardinals and her fifth goal of the season at the 98:40 mark.

Freshman goalkeeper Sophia Weidner (Medina) made three saves and falls to 5-5-1 on year.  

BW is back in action on Wednesday, October 26 when it hosts the OAC leading Ohio Northern University Polar Bears in an OAC game on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium at 7 p.m.
