Women’s Soccer Holds Off Otterbein to Advance to OAC Semifinals

WESTERVILLE, Ohio—The fifth seeded Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team defeated the fourth seeded Otterbein University, 3-2, in an Ohio Athletic Conference quarterfinal game inside Memorial Stadium.

BW (12-8-1) advances to the OAC semifinals where it will travel to Ada to square off against the top seeded and OAC regular season champion Ohio Northern University on Thursday, November 3 at 7 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets pick up their second consecutive victory against Otterbein (10-6-2) in the OAC tournament and were led by sophomore All-OAC forward Rachel Bender (Massillon/Jackson) as she scored a goal and added an assist for a game-high three points.

After a scoreless first half, BW scored the first goal of the game early in the 48th minute when Marissa Fabrizi (Brunswick) headed in her second goal in the last two games off a cross from Bender. Freshman midfielder Kenna Poptic (Dublin/Jerome) made it 2-0 as she netted her first career goal off a pass from junior All-OAC Courtney Schutz (Mentor) at the 68:01 mark.

The Cardinals outscored the Yellow Jackets 2-1 in the final eight minutes of play, but failed to even the score before time expired.  Otterbein senior forward Madison Burchfield buried an unassisted in the in the 83rd minute, Bender answered the Cardinals goal  with her 19th goal of the season off a lead pass from All-OAC junior midfielder Anna Poptic (Dublin/Jerome) in the 89th minute and the Cardinals senior midfielder Erica Meier closed out the scoring in the final minute of regulation.

Freshman goalkeeper Sophia Weidner (Medina) made 10 saves and improved to 7-6-1 on the year. 

The winners of Thursday's semifinal games advance to the OAC Tournament Championship on Saturday, November 5 on the campus of the highest seed at a time to be announced. The winner of the OAC Tournament receives an automatic bid in to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
