No. 6 Wrestling Places Fifth at NWCA National Duals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 6 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team placed fifth with a 4-1 record at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals inside the Kentucky Expo Center. 

On day one, BW (10-3) defeated Dubuque (Iowa) College by a final score of 36-10 and Olivet (Mich.) College by a final score of 26-12 but fell to No. 8 nationally-ranked Wabash (Ind.) College by a final score of 18-15.  On the final day, the Yellow Jackets defeated No. 1 nationally-ranked Coe (Iowa) College by a final score of 27-17 and Johnson & Wales (R.I.) University by a final score of 25-16.

Vs. Dubuque

  • Sophomore 125-pounder Johnny Novak (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) won a 5-2 decision over Cade Hornback
  • Sophomore 133-pounder Jaden Hinton (Glassboro, N.J.) won an 8-3 decision over Carson Sauriol
  • Junior 141-pounder Conner DeBoe (Mentor) won by pinfall in 3:38 over Jesus Sanchez
  • Sophomore and No. 4 nationally-ranked 149-pounder Michael Petrella (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) won a 14-5 major decision over Jessy Diaz
  • Senior All-American and No. 9 nationally-ranked 165-pounder Dalton Leightner (Ravenna/Rootstown) won a 5-0 decision over Evan Atchley
  • Freshman 174-pounder Donovan Palmer (North Ridgeville/Lutheran West) won by pinfall in 5:35 over Heston Murdock
  • Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and No. 7 nationally-ranked 184-pounder Luke Salmon (Sandusky/Perkins) won a 15-0 technical fall over Jaymoreye Gonzales
  • Junior All-American and No. 8 nationally-ranked 197 pounder Doug Byrne (Wickliffe) won by pinfall in 1:56 over Tyler Thurston

Vs. Wabash

  • Petrella won a 1-0 decision at 149 pounds over No. 10 nationally-ranked Alex Barr
  • Senior All-American and No. 11 nationally-ranked 157-pounder Stanley Bleich (North Ridgeville/Elyria Catholic) won a 10-3 decision over Tyson Nisley
  • Palmer won a 3-1 decision at 174-pounds over Raymond Arebalo
  • Salmon won a 5-3 overtime decision at 184 pounds over Charles Baczek
  • Byrne won a 6-3 decision at 197-pounds over No. 13 nationally-ranked Jack Heldt

Vs. Olivet

  • Hinton won a 16-0 technical fall at 133 pounds over Robert Davids
  • DeBoe won a 9-4 decision at 141 pounds over Dylan Phelps
  • Petrella won a 7-2 decision at 149 pounds over No. 14 nationally-ranked Hunter Murphy
  • Bleich won a 5-3 decision at 157 pounds over Jeffrey Leach
  • Palmer won a 12-8 decision at 174 pounds over Liam Kinjorski
  • Salmon won a 4-2 decision at 184 pounds over Justin Carnahan
  • Byrne won by pinfall in 47 seconds at 197 pounds over Hunter Caister

  • Hinton won a 12-6 decision at 133-pounds over Lauden Edwards
  • Petrella won a 5-4 decision at 149 pounds over No. 12 nationally-ranked Riley Wright

  • Salmon won by pinfall in 3:30 at 184 pounds over No. 9 nationally ranked Ryan Schott

  • Hinton won a 13-0 major decision at 133 pounds over Nicholas DeSola
  • Petrella won a 9-6 decision at 149 pounds over Gabriel McDaniel
  • Freshman 157-pounder Tommy West (Avon Lake/St. Edward) won a 16-2 technical fall over Darius Joyce
  • Leightner won a 17-4 major decision at 165 pounds over Robert Garcia
  • Salmon won an 11-8 decision at 184 pounds over No. 8 nationally-ranked Ryan Devivo
  • Byrne won a 10-3 decision at 197 pounds over Thomas DiResta
  • Senior 285-pounder Jarod Miller (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) won a 9-2 decision over Dylan Harr

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 15 when it travels to North Manchester, Indiana to compete in the annual Spartan Mat Classic hosted by Manchester University inside the Stauffer-Wolfe Arena at 9 a.m.  The Yellow Jackets return to dual action on Tuesday, January 18 when they host an OAC match against Wilmington College in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7 p.m.
