No. 5 Wrestling Closes Out Regular Season at Unscored John Carroll Open

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The No. 5 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule as it competed at the unscored John Carroll University Open inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

BW had six wrestlers place in the top four.

Freshman 141-pounder Max Miller (Cleveland/North Royalton) – Champion

  • Won a 10-6 decision over Americo Milani of John Carroll in the first round
  • Won a 7-1 decision over Reese Vollmer of Gannon (Pa.) in the second round
  • Won a 9-4 decision over Anthony Corgliano of Gannon (Pa.) in the third round
  • Won by a medical forfeit 

Freshman 285-pounder Ben DeGuzman (North Canton/Hoover) – Second Place

  • Won an 11-0 major decision over Brayden Butzin of Ashland in the first round
  • Won by pinfall in 4:47 over Drew Harris of Ohio in the second round
  • Lost by pinfall to Wyatt Bailey of Ashland in the third round

125-pounder David Panda (Columbia, Md./Atholton) – Third Place

  • Won a 9-4 decision over Daniel Adams of Cleveland State in the first round
  • Won by pinfall in 3:43 over Terry Bates of Central Michigan in the second round
  • Lost a 12-4 major decision to Marcello Milani in the third round
  • Won by pinfall in 5:39 over Dierre Clayton of Ohio in fourth round
  • Won a 10-9 decision over Jacob Johnson of Lake Erie in fifth round

Sophomore 149-pounder Justin Ritchie (Carlisle) – Fourth Place

  • Had a first round bye
  • Won a 5-0 decision over Carson Filer of Gannon (Pa.) in the second round
  • Lost an 8-2 decision to Andrew Halko of Akron in the third round
  • Won 3-0 decision over Gustavo De Lima of Grand Valley State (Mich.) in the fourth round
  • Lost a 9-5 decision to Ryan Forest of John Carroll in the fifth round

Freshman 184-pounder Jack Cain (Springfield/Shawnee) – Fourth Place

  • Had a first round bye
  • Lost a 9-2 decision over Graham Carson of the Ohio State Club in the second round
  • Won a 14-3 major decision over Sean McElhinny of John Carroll in third round
  • Lost by pinfall to Luke McKeon of John Carroll in fourth round

Senior 285-pounder Dominic Shelley (Mentor) - Fourth Place

  • Lost by pinfall to Mike Viramontes of Notre Dame College in the first round
  • Had a second round bye
  • Won a 5-1 decision over Matt Miracle of Lake Erie in the third round
  • Won a 2-1 decision over Justin Jaeckin of Cleveland State in the fourth round
  • Won by forfeit in the fifth round
  • Lost by pinfall to Marvelous Rutledge of Notre Dame College in sixth round

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday and Saturday, February 25 and 26 when they travel to Adrian, Michigan to compete in the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships hosted by Adrian College in the Merillat Sports & Fitness Center. 

The NCAA Division III Championships will be contested on Friday and Saturday, March 11 and 12 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
