No. 5 Wrestling Wins Three Matches at OAC Duals, Claims Share of OAC Title

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The No. 5 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team won three matches at the Ohio Athletic Conference duals hosted by Muskingum University in the Performance Arena inside the Anne C. Steele Center.

With its three victories, BW (14-2, 6-0 OAC) claimed at least a share of its sixth OAC Title in the last seven seasons.  The Yellow Jackets can claim the outright title with a victory over Heidelberg University on Tuesday, February 8 in Tiffin.

BW won its three matches as it defeated No. 24 nationally-ranked and crosstown rival John Carroll University by a score of 25-17, Muskingum by a score of 53-0 and Ohio Northern University by a score of 22-9.

Vs. John Carroll

  • Junior and No. 2 nationally-ranked 125-pounder Jacob Decatur (Akron/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), who is this week's OAC Wrestler of the Week, won by technical fall.
  • Sophomore and No. 4 nationally-ranked 149-pounder Michael Petrella (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) won a 10-0 major decision
  • Senior All-American 157-pounder Stanley Bleich (North Ridgeville/Elyria Catholic) won a 4-3 decision
  • Junior and No. 7 nationally-ranked All-OAC 184-pounder Luke Salmon (Sandusky/Perkins) won a 19-3 technical fall
  • Junior and No. 3 nationally-ranked All-American Doug Byrne (Wickliffe) won a 6-2 decision
  • Senior 285-pounder Jarod Miller (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) won by pinfall in 4:54

  • Sophomore 125-pounder David Panda (Columbia, Md./Atholton) won a 17-2 technical fall
  • Sophomore 133-pounder Jaden Hinton (Glassboro, N.J.) won a 18-1 technical fall
  • Junior 141-pounder Conner DeBoe (Mentor) won a 10-3 decision
  • Petrella won by forfeit at 149 pounds
  • Bleich won a 19-4 technical fall at 157 pounds
  • Senior and No. 9 nationally-ranked All-American 165-pounder Dalton Leightner (Ravenna/Rootstown) won by pinfall in 5:41
  • Freshman 174-pounder Donovan Palmer (North Ridgeville/Lutheran West) won by pinfall on 2:14
  • Senior Academic All-OAC 184-pounder Aidan Cardaman (Geneva) won by an 18-0 technical fall
  • Byrne won by pinfall in 5:52 at 197 pounds
  • Miller won by forfeit at 285 pounds

Vs. Ohio Northern University

  • Decatur won by an 18-3 technical fall at 125 pounds
  • Hinton won an 11-7 decision at 133 pounds
  • Petrella won a 7-5 decision at 149 pounds in extra time
  • Bleich won a 10-4 decision at 157 pounds
  • Palmer won a 3-1 decision at 174 pounds
  • Salmon won a 4-0 decision at 184 pounds
  • Byrne won an 8-2 decision at 197 pounds 

In addition, other select members of the Yellow Jackets competed at the Dr. Si. Ostrach Duals hosted by Case Western Reserve University.

  • Sophomore 125-pounder Johnny Novak (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) won a 10-2 decision over Case Western Reserve,
  • Freshman 125-pounder Brett Blaess (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) won an 18-1 technical fall against Case Western Reserve and won by forfeit against Defiance
  • Sophomore 133-pounder Jackson Allen (Webster, N.Y./Webster Central) won by forfeit over Case Western Reserve
  • Sophomore 141-pounder Justin Ritchie (Carlisle) won a 16-4 technical fall against Defiance,
  • Freshman 157-pounder Tyler Wittreich (Painesville/Riverside) won an 18-2 technical fall over Case Western Reserve and won by pinfall in 1:49 against Defiance,
  • Junior Academic All-OAC 165-pounder Luke Hopkins (Cuyahoga Heights) won by pinfall in 6:53 against Case Western Reserve and won by pinfall in 3:48 against Defiance,
  • Sophomore 165-pounder Hunter Kupniewski (North Royalton) won a 17-2 technical fall against Case Western Reserve
  • Senior All-OAC 174-pounder Kevin Kelly (North Olmsted) won a 9-2 decision against Defiance
  • Freshman 174-pounder Carter Lloyd (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) won a 17-2 technical fall against Case Western Reserve and won by pinfall in 1:59 against Defiance
  • Freshman 197-pounder Jack Cain (Springfield/Shawnee) won by forfeit against Case Western Reserve
  • Senior 285-pounder Dominic Shelley (Mentor) won a 2-1 against Defiance
  • Junior Academic All-OAC 285-pounder Matthew Werts (Buffalo, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate Institute) won by pinfall in 5:08 against Waynesburg (Pa.)
  • Freshman Ben Guzman (North Canton/Hoover) won by pinfall in 2:26 against Waynesburg (Pa.) 

BW returns to the mats on Saturday, February 5 when it hosts the 35th Annual John Summa Invitational on Seniors' Day inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse at 10 a.m.
