No. 11 Wrestling Wins Four Matches in Two States

BEREA, Ohio -- The No. 11 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University team competed in two different states and in six matches as the team competed in the Kalahari Duals hosted by Heidelberg University and the Olivet (Mich.) College Duals.

BW (6-2) won three of four matches at the Kalahari Duals with victories over Defiance College, Trine (Ind.) University and Adrian (Mich.) College.  The Yellow Jackets won one of two matches at the Olivet Duals as it defeated No. 18 nationally ranked and host Olivet but fell to NCAA Division I Michigan State University.

Vs. Defiance, (Won, 39-4)

  • Sophomore 125-pounder Johnny Novak (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) won by forfeit
  • Junior 141-pounder Conner DeBoe (Mentor) won by a 13-11 decision
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC 149-pounder Tanner McHugh (New Ringgold, Pa./Tamaqua) won by pinfall in 5:45
  • Freshman 157-pounder Tyler Wittreich (Painesville/Riverside) won by a 10-9 decision
  • Junior Academic All-OAC 165-pounder Luke Hopkins (Cuyahoga Heights) won by a 9-3 decision
  • Freshman 174-pounder Carter Llyod (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) won by a 9-3 decision
  • Sophomore 184-pounder Mitch Sanders (Newbury) won by a 9-3 decision
  • Senior Academic All-OAC 197-pounder Aidan Cardaman (Geneva) won by pinfall in 3:46
  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC 285-pounder Drew Levis (Elyria) won by pinfall in 8:52

  • Freshman 133-pounder Brett Blaess (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) won by forfeit
  • DeBoe won an 11-0 major decision at 141 pounds
  • McHugh won an 16-12 decision at 149 pounds
  • Freshman 157-pounder Tommy West (Avon Lake/St. Edward) won by forfeit
  • Hopkins won by a 10-6 decision at 165 pounds
  • Lloyd won by pinfall in 4:05 at 174 pounds
  • Cardaman won a 9-0 major decision at 184 pounds
  • Sanders won a 7-3 decision at 197 pounds
  • Junior Academic All-OAC 285-pounder Matthew Werts (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) won a 6-2 decision

  • DeBoe won a 13-6 decision at 141 pounds
  • McHugh won an 4-3 decision at 149 pounds
  • West won by pinfall in 1:50 at 157 pounds
  • Hopkins won a 7-4 decision at 165 pounds

Vs. No. 18 Wisconsin-Oshkosh (Loss, 44-3)

  • McHugh won a 12-7 decision at 149-pounds

Vs. Olivet (Won, 28-15)

  • No. 2 nationally-ranked junior 125-pounder Jacob Decatur (Akron/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) won by a 17-2 technical fall
  • Sophomore 133-pounder Jaden Hinton (Glassboro, N.J.) won a 16-2 major decision
  • Sophomore 149-pounder Michael Petrella (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley), who is this week's D3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week, won by pinfall in 2:57
  • Senior All-American and No. 13 nationally-ranked 157-pounder Stanley Bleich (North Ridgeville/Elyria Catholic) won an 18-7 major decision
  • Junior All-OAC and No. 6 nationally-ranked 184-pounder Luke Salmon (Sandusky/Perkins) won a 9-4 decision
  • Junior All-American and No. 8 nationally-ranked 197-pounder Doug Byrne (Wickliffe) won by pinfall in 29 seconds.

Vs. Michigan State (Loss, 37-9 )

  • Decatur won a 3-2 decision at 125 pounds
  • Junior 141-pounder Zak Anderson (Elyria/Midview) won by pinfall in 5:00

BW is back in action on Thursday and Friday, January 6 and 7 when it travels to Louisville, Kentucky when it competes in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals inside the Kentucky Expo Center.  The Yellow Jackets return home to the friendly confines of the Ursprung Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 18 when they host an OAC match against Wilmington College at 7 p.m.
