Five Wrestlers Selected to All-OAC Team, Coaching Staff Tabbed as Staff of the Year

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Five Baldwin Wallace University wrestlers have been selected to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference wrestling team while head coach Jamie Gibbs, associate head coach Jason Zastrow and the rest of the BW coaching staff were selected as the Coaching Staff of the Year.

Junior and No. 1 nationally-ranked 125-pounder Jacob Decatur (Akron/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), sophomore and No. 4 nationally-ranked 149-pounder Michael Petrella (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley), senior All-American and No. 15 nationally-ranked 157-pounder Stanley Bleich (North Ridgeville/Elyria Catholic), junior All-OAC and No. 7 nationally-ranked Luke Salmon (Sandusky/Perkins) and junior All-American and No. 3 nationally-ranked Doug Byrne (Wickliffe) were named to the first-team.

Decatur, who garners his first accolade, is 27-1 in his first season. He has recorded eight technical falls, five major decisions and three pins. Decatur is a five-time 125-pound invitational champion and a two-time OAC Wrestler of the Week selection.

Petrella, who earns his first honor, leads the team with a record of 30-2.  He has tallied 11 pins, three technical falls and two major decisions.  Petrella was named D3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week on December 16 and is a three-time 149-pound invitational champion. For his career, Petrella has a record of 32-3 with 12 pins, three major decisions and three technical falls.  Off the mat, he is a National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American. 

Bleich, who garners his fifth accolade and his second first-team nod, has a record of 26-6 this season.  He has notched four major decisions, two technical falls and one pin. Bleich was the OAC Wrestler of the Week on February 7 and the 157-pound champion at the 35th John Summa Invitational. For his career, Bleich is the school's all-time wins leader with 131 victories.  He has recorded 35 major decisions, 10 pinfalls and four technical falls.  Bleich is a four-time OAC Wrestler of the Week selection. Off the mat, he is a four-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American, three-time Academic All-OAC selection, College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, Dean's List student, Jacket Scholar, member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society and the 2021 BW Kenneth Steingass Most Outstanding Male Athlete Award recipient.

Salmon, who earns his third honor and his second first-team selection, has a record of 21-2.  He has recorded eight pins and five technical falls.  For his career, Salmon has a record of 50-13 with 16 pinfalls, nine technical falls and five major decisions.  Off the mat, he is a National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American.

Byrne, who garners his second accolade, has a record of 22-3.  He leads the team with a career-best 14 pins along with three major decisions.  For his career, Byrne is a National Wrestling Coaches Association All-American with a record of 53-12.  He has tallied 30 pinfalls, six major decisions and one technical fall.  Off the mat, Byrne is a National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American.

The Yellow Jackets return to the mats on Friday and Saturday, February 25 and 26 when they travel to Adrian, Michigan to compete in the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships hosted by Adrian College in the Merillat Sports & Fitness Center. 

The NCAA Division III Championships will be contested on Friday and Saturday, March 11 and 12 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
