No. 6 Wrestling Stays Perfect with Two OAC Victories

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 6 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace wrestling remained perfect on the season with a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference victories over Ohio Northern University and Wilmington College inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse.

BW (4-0, 4-0 OAC) opened the day by defeating Wilmington (0-3, 0-3 OAC) by a final score of 50-3.  The Yellow Jackets closed the day with a 36-12 victory over Ohio Northern (2-1, 2-1 OAC).

#6 BW vs. Wilmington

BW won nine of 10 matches for the victory.  Sophomore All-OAC 125-pounder Jack Stanley (Brecksville/Brecksville) opened the match with a forfeit victory.    Senior All-OAC 133-pounder Dante Ginetti (Poland/Seminary) earned a 21-3 technical fall victory. Sophomore 141-pounder Zachery Anderson (Elyria/Midview) won by pinfall in a time of 3:50.   Sophomore 149-pounder Conner DeBoe (Mentor) won by forfeit.   Senior All-American 157-pounder Dalton Leightner (Ravenna/Rootstown), who is ranked second nationally, won by pinfall in 59 seconds.   Senior All-American and Academic All-American 165-pounder Stanley Bleich (North Ridgeville/Elyria Catholic), who is this week's OAC Wrestler of the Week, won by a 7-3 decision.  Sophomore 174-pounder Joey Koplow (Newbury/Kenston) won by pinfall in a time of 2:00.  Sophomore All-OAC pounder Lucas Salmon (Sandusky/Perkins) won by pinfall in a time of 1:19.  Sophomore All-American 197-pounder Doug Byrne (Wickliffe) won by forfeit. 

#6 BW vs. ONU

The Yellow Jackets won eight of 10 matches to remain undefeated.   Stanley started the match off  at 125 pounds with his first pinfall of the season in 4:52.    Ginetti won by pinfall at 133-pounds in 33 seconds. Leightner won by pinfall at 157-pounds in 4:32.  Bleich won a 3-1 decision at 165-pounds.  Koplow picked up a 14-10 decision at 174-pounds.  Salmon won by pinfall in 1:47 at 184-pounds.  Byrne earned a 6-0 decision.  Sophomore 285-pounder Drew Levis (Elyria) closed out the match with a 6-1 decision.

The 2021 dual season will feature several "extra matches" with every scheduled dual meet. These matches will not factor into dual scoring but are official, countable matches that will be considered for postseason seeding purposes.

  • Senior 157-pounder Kevin Kelly (North Olmsted) defeated Rhett Roeder of Ohio Northern with a 12-3 major decision and Adrian Salomone of Wilmington by pinfall in 14 seconds.
  • Senior 157/165-pounder Ryan Orr (Wadsworth) defeated Noah Williamson of Ohio Northern by pinfall in a time of 2:30, Patrick Kelly of Wilmington by pinfall in 56 seconds and Rhett Roeder of Ohio Northern by a 4-1 decision.
  • Sophomore 165-pounder Luke Hopkins (Cuyahoga Heights) defeated Noah Williamson of Ohio Northern by pinfall in a time of 4:10.
  • Freshman 165-pounder Hunter Kupniewski (North Royalton) defeated Patrick Kelley of Wilmington by a 16-0 technical fall.
  • Junior 174-pounder Ryan Haas (Toledo/Maumee) defeated AJ Szigeti of Ohio Northern with an 18-10 major decision.
  • Junior 184-pounder Aidan Cardaman (Geneva) defeated Elijah Wood of Wilmington with a 16-4 major decision.
  • Sophomore 184-pounder Griffin Rathburn (New Albany/Bishop Watterson) defeated Nick Machuca of Ohio Northern with a 2-0 decision and by pinfall over Skyler Cowgill of Wilmington in 2:27.
  • Junior 285-pounder Dominic Shelley (Mentor) defeated Jadon Brownlee of Ohio Northern with a 4-2 decision and defeated Logan Painter of Ohio Northern by pinfall in 6:59.
  • Junior 285-pounder Jarod Miller (Greenville, Pa. /Reynolds) defeated Logan Painter of Ohio Northern by extra period 4-2 decision and defeated Jadon Brownlee of Ohio Northern by pinfall in 4:16.

BW concludes the OAC regular season schedule when it travels to Alliance for dual matches against Heidelberg University and the No. 9 nationally-ranked University of Mount Union at 1 and 3 p.m. in the Peterson Fieldhouse inside the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
