No. 9 Wrestling Defeats Cross-town Rival John Carroll in OAC Opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The No. 9-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and cross-town rival John Carroll University, 27-11, in its OAC opener in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

BW (15-3) was led by senior All-OAC 157-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) as he returned from injury and won by pin fall in just 56 seconds in his first action of the season. The pin by Shapiro spurred 23 unanswered points by the Yellow Jackets to secure the victory.

Junior All-OAC 125-pounder Chris Doyle (Akron/Green), sophomore 174-pounder Justin Ransom (Madison) and sophomore 184-pounder and OAC Wrestler of the Week Zeckary Lehman (Akron/Revere) each picked up victories by major decision. Doyle won his bout by a score of 13-1, Ransom earned a 14-4 victory in his match and Lehman won his bout by an 8-0 count.

BW had three grapplers win by decision. Sophomore All-OAC 165-pounder Anthony Arroyo (Maumee) won by an 8-6 count. Junior All-OAC 197-pounder Tyler Maclellan (Medina/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) picked up a victory with a 4-3 decision. Senior 285-pounder Gabe Mahaney (Green) closed out the match with an 8-4 victory.  

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 14 as select members of the team travel to Manchester, Indiana to compete at the Spartan Mat Classic hosted by Manchester University in the Stauffer-Wolfe Arena at 9 a.m.
