No. 18 BW Wrestlers Beat Cleveland Cross-Town Rival John Carroll, 35-6

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio --  The 18th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team beat Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 35-6, in the OAC dual match opener for each team inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. The win was BW's third straight against the Blue Streaks.

BW (12-7, 1-0 OAC) had five major decision wins, one triumph by decision and two forfeit victories for its 35 points. JCU had two wins by decision for its six points.

The Yellow Jackets were led by senior Division III All-American Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./ Cathedral Prep) who won his 110th career match with a 13-5 major decision. The match was 6-5 until the final seconds when Chase took down his JCU opponent and earned four more back points to claim the major decision. Chase improved to 15-3 this season.

In addition, senior 184-pounder Ben LeBrun (Strongsville) won by a 12-2 major decision to improve to 12-7 this season. Sophomore 125-pounder Chris Doyle (Uniontown/ Green) won by a 13-4 major decision to improve to 11-10 this season. Senior 149-pounder Joey Schmidt, a four-year starter, won a 10-2 major decision to improve to 13-5 this season. Sophomore All-OAC 197-pounder Tyler Maclellan (Medina/ CVCA) won by a 16-4 major decision to improve to 15-8 this season. Senior 285-pounder Joe Belford (Berea/ Lakewood St. Edward) won by a 5-2 decision to improve to 13-10 this season.

BW also won two other matches as senior two-time All-American 133-pounder  Jesse Gunter (Akron/ Coventry) and junior 141-pounder Zack Taylor (Brunswick) each won by forfeit. Gunter, who is ranked third in Division III, improved to 17-1 overall  and won his 103rd career match. Taylor improved to 10-10 overall.

With its loss, JCU is 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, January 23 when BW travels to Greenville, Pennsylvania to compete at the Thiel College Mel Berry Duals at 11 a.m. At Thiel, BW will wrestle three matches, including one against No.9-ranked Ithaca (N.Y.). The next home OAC dual is next Tuesday, Jan. 26 against Muskingum University in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.
