McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Two Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse program records were broken as the Yellow Jackets defeated Linfield (Ore.) College 22-12 in the team's final spring break game on the west coast.
The Yellow Jackets (2-2) set a record for most draw controls in a game with 22 while junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference midfielder Megan Patrick (Ravenna/Kent Roosevelt) set the single game record by corralling 12 draw controls herself.
Patrick also scored a career-high seven goals to lead BW while senior attack Caitlin Wheeler (Lake Mills, Wis./Oak Park-River Forest {Ill.}) added five goals of her own. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Paugh (South Lyon, Mich.), sophomore All-OAC midfielder Hannah Stein (Medina/Highland) and freshman attack Alexis O'Neill (Westlake) each chipped in an additional three goals.
Junior defender Genna Hughes led Linfield (2-1) with five goals while freshman defender Gabriella Moe, freshman attack Maddie Cole and freshman attack Jenna Hessel netted two goals apiece.
BW initially trailed 3-0 until the 24:55 mark in the first half when Wheeler got her team on the scoreboard, beginning a 5-0 run to take the lead after which the Yellow Jackets never looked back. The closest the Wildcats got was with 7:56 left in the first half when they only trailed 10-5. Patrick and Wheeler each scored five goals in the half, helping BW out to 13-6 lead.
Linfield opened up the second half scoring with a goal from Hughes at the 29:07 mark to come within six goals of the lead and was able to keep the Yellow Jackets from exploding on any more huge runs. BW took a 10-goal lead with 14:01 left in the game and was able to maintain that advantage until time expired.
BW dominated most of the statistical categories - outshooting the Wildcats 43-19; winning 22 draw controls to Linfield's 13; and committing nine fewer turnovers (20-11). The Wildcats did hold an advantage in clears (11-for-11 compared to 8-for-11) and free position shots (2-for-3 compared to 2-for-5).
The Yellow Jackets will return to Berea for the 2018 home opener against Allegheny (Pa.) College on Wednesday, March 14, at 7 p.m. inside George Finnie Stadium.
