Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Transylvania (Ky.) in Season Opener

LEXINGTON, KY. -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team opened the season with a 12-3 victory against Transylvania (Ky.) University inside Pat Deacon Stadium.

BW (1-0) was led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference midfielder Kayla Miller (Hudson) junior attack Caitlin Wheeler (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest), freshman attack Brie Martineau (Strongsville) and sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Moran (Carlisle, Pa.).  Miller recorded a hat trick as she netted three first half goals.   Wheeler, Martineau and Moran all scored her two goals.

Transylvania (1-1) was led by Lindsey Jenkins, Alexis Rubin and Bailee Stevens with one goal apiece.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets scored all nine goals led by Miller and Martineau as they accounted for five of the nine tallies.  Miller found the back of the cage three times with goals at the 27:27, 9:57 and 6:10 marks. Martineau scored her first two collegiate goals at 14:30 and 5:10.

BW also got goals from senior All-OAC midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River), senior attack Jenna Turner (Carmel, Ind.), Wheeler and freshman defender Hannah Stein (Medina/Highland).  Kocher netted the goal at the 15:11 mark and assisted on four other goals.  Turner scored at 2:27 and Stein followed at the 1:39 mark.   Wheeler closed out the scoring when she tallied her goal with nine seconds remaining in the first half.  

In the second stanza, the Yellow Jackets pushed its lead to 11-0 on goals by Wheeler and sophomore attack Hannah Albrechta (Uniontown/Green) with Albrechta's goal coming at the 20:35 mark.  After a Pioneer goal at the 18:34 mark, BW's Moran (Carlisle, Pa.) netted her first collegiate goal at 11:06. Transylvania got goals from Jenkins and Stevens with the last coming at the 6:04 mark.  BW closed out the scoring with 25 seconds remaining when Moran netted her second goal.

In net for the Yellow Jackets, senior netminder Amanda Getto (Medina) faced 22 shots and allowed three goals with eight saves.

BW is back in action on Sunday, February 26 when it travels to Danville, Kentucky for a non-conference game against Centre College on Joe McDaniel Field at Farris Stadium.  Faceoff is slated for 12 p.m.
