Women’s Lacrosse Knocks Off Centre for Kentucky Weekend Sweep

DANVILLE, KY. -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team earned a weekend sweep as it defeated Centre College by a final score of 15-9 on South Campus Field.

BW (2-0) was led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC midfielder Maddie Russell (Lakewood/Rocky River) and junior attack Caitlin Wheeler (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) as each scored a game-high tying four goals.  Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference midfielder Kayla Miller (Hudson) and sophomore attack Hannah Albrechta (Uniontown/Green) contributed three goals apiece.

Centre (3-1) was led by Hannah Bellamah as she scored a game-high tying four goals. Haden Gibbons chipped in with three goals.

In the first half, the Colonels jumped out to the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Gibbons at the 28:51 mark.   The Yellow Jackets responded with a 7-0 run to take the 7-1 advantage on two goals each from Miller, Russell and Wheeler as well as one from Albrechta with the last coming from Russell at 7:51.  Centre answered right away to cut the lead down to 7-2 when Bellamah found the back of the cage at the 7:46.   Wheeler scored her third goal of the half just 32 seconds later to give BW an 8-2 advantage at 7:18.   The Colonels closed out the opening half on a 2-0 run but trailed 8-4 at the intermission.

In the second stanza, Centre cut the lead down to 8-5 when Bellamah scored just 14 seconds in the half.  The Yellow Jacket pushed its lead back up to four goals when Albrechta found the back of the cage at the 29:07 mark.  The Colonels responded with a 3-0 run to cut the lead down to just one at 9-8 when Ellen Resinger scored at 24:26. BW answered with a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 14-8 when senior All-OAC midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River) found the back of the cage at the 4:27 mark.   Centre got its final goal from Bellamah at 3:39. The Yellow Jackets closed out the scoring as Miller recorded her second straight hat trick at the 2:53 mark.

BW senior netminder Amanda Getto (Medina) faced 24 shots and allowed nine goals with 11 saves.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, March 1 when they host NCAA Division II Ursuline College in their home opener on the Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
