Women’s Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short Against Mount Union

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin University women's lacrosse team was defeated by the Ohio Athletic Conference defending champion University of Mount Union 9-8 inside Mount Union Stadium.

BW (9-5, 2-2 OAC) was led by junior midfielder Maddie Russell (Lakewood / Rocky River) who scored a team-high three goals and added one assist for four points. Russell also picked up a team-high eight ground balls.  

Mount Union (11-3, 4-0 OAC) was led by senior attack Susie Kraus scored a game-high four goals. Along with Kraus, senior attack Katherine Doraty scored three goals and added one assist for four points.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River) scored via an assist from senior attack Emma Harding (Akron / Richfield) at the 20:55 mark. The Raiders went on a 6-0 run to take a 6-1 lead when Kraus scored an unassisted goal with 9:23 left in the half. The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 6-3 at halftime when freshman midfielder Megan Patrick (Ravenna / Kent Roosevelt) scored with three seconds remaining in the first half. 

Mount Union went on a 2-1 run and extended its lead to 8-4 when Doraty scored at the 18:59 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 4-0 run and tied the game at 8-8 when Russell netted her third goal of the game with 3:41 left in regulation.  The Raiders scored the game-winner when senior midfielder Kolbie Haines scored her first goal of the game with 47 seconds remaining in regulation.

Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Giordanengo (Cranberry Township, Pa. / Seneca Valley) made eight saves in the losing effort.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action when they travel to Ada on Saturday, April 23 to face-off against Ohio Northern University in an OAC game inside Dial-Roberson Stadium at 1 p.m.
