Women’s Lacrosse Ends Season with Loss to No. 18 Mount Union in OAC Championship Game

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The third-seeded Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team ended its season as it was defeated by No.18-nationally ranked and top-seeded the University of Mount Union in the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament championship game, 20-5 in Mount Union Stadium.

BW (8-6), who knocked off second-seeded John Carroll University in the semifinals, closes out it season for the second straight year in the OAC Title game. Mount Union (18-0), who wins its second straight OAC Tournament Championship, now advances to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman attack Caitlin Wheeler (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) with three goals.   Senior attack Colleen Bodkin (East Amherst, N.Y.) and sophomore All-OAC midfielder Maddie Russell each added a goal and an assist.

Junior All-OAC attack Katherine Doraty and junior midfielder Emily Bergert led the Purple Raiders each with a game-high tying five goals. Junior All-OAC midfielder Taylor Pensyl and junior All-OAC midfielder Susie Kraus each tallied three goals.  Sophomore midfielder Michelle Tegethoff and freshman midfielder Marjie McNamara each contributed two goals.

Mount Union opened the game with three unanswered goals two by Doraty with her last coming at the 25:40 mark off the assist from Emily Sendker.  BW got on the board and cut the lead down to 3-1 when Russell scored the unassisted goal at 25:40.  The clock did not start and the officials count the goal and the time to be identical.

The Purple Raiders scored the final eight goals of the opening half with the last coming on the unassisted goal by Bergert as time expired to give Mount Union the 12-1 led at the intermission.

The Purple Raiders opened the second half with another score to push their lead to 13-1 on the unassisted goal by McNamara at the 27:55 mark.   The Yellow Jackets got their second goal of the game and cut the lead down to 13-2 when Bodkin found the back of the net of the assist from Russell at 22:11.    Mount Union reeled of two straight goal to extend their lead to 15-2 with the last coming by Susie Kraus at the 19:29 mark.
 

BW responded with two unanswered goals by Wheeler to cut the lead down to 15-4 at 16.44.   The Purple Raiders came right back with three straight goals to take a 18-4 lead on the second goal of the half for Kraus at the 10:25 mark.   The Yellow Jackets again cut the lead down to 18-5 when Wheeler scored her third goal of the half off the assist from Bodkin at 6:15.  Mount Union scored the final two goals to secure the 20-5 victory with the last coming when McNamara scored her second goal off the assist from Doraty with nine seconds left.

In goal for the BW, sophomore netminder Amanda Getto (Medina), this week's OAC Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, faced 31 total shots, including 25 on-goal, allowed 20 goals and made five saves.
