No. 19 Women’s Basketball Falls to Oberlin in Double Overtime Thriller

OBERLIN, Ohio – The No. 19 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team falls to Oberlin College in a non-conference double overtime thriller by a final score of 69-65 in Phillips Gymnasium inside the Phillips Physical Education Center. 

BW (3-2) had three players score in double figures led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) as she scored 17 points.   Junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) recorded her fourth career double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed a career-best and game-high 19 rebounds.  Junior All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) contributed 12 points.

Oberlin (7-0) had four players score in double digits led by junior guard/forward Camille Zinaich as she scored a game-best 19 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Alyson Jefferson and sophomore forward Angela Kumler each tallied 14 points.  Senior guard Gina Lombard chipped in with 12 points.

1st Quarter (BW, 13-12)

  • BW outshot the Yeowomen 35.7 percent to 23.5 percent from the field
  • The Yellow Jackets knocked down the only three three-pointers of the quarter
  • Oberlin won the rebound battle by a 15-7 margin

2nd Quarter (OC, 27-24)

  • The Yeowomen opened the quarter on a 7-2 run
  • Oberlin outshot BW 41.7 percent to 15.8 percent from the field
  • The Yellow Jackets hit five from the charity stripe to just four for the Yeowomen
  • BW won the rebound battle by a margin of 14-9 

3rd Quarter (OC, 42-41)

  • The Yellow Jackets opened the quarter on an 8-2 run to regain the lead at 32-29 on a three-pointer from senior forward Kira Philpot (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) at the 6:12 mark
  • The Yeowomen closed the quarter on a 13-9 run
  • BW outshot Oberlin 58.3 percent to 33.3 percent from the field
  • The Yellow Jackets knocked down three three-pointers to two for the Yeowomen
  • BW won the rebound battle by a margin of 9-6 

4th Quarter (Tied, 53-53)

  • Oberlin forced the game into overtime on a jumper by Zinaich jumper with 12 seconds remaining
  • The Yellow Jackets missed a shot as time expired
  • BW outshot the Yeowomen 27.8 percent to 25.0 percent from the field
  • The Yellow Jackets won the rebound battle by a margin of 12-6

Overtime (Tied, 63-63)

  • BW got a blocked shot on an Oberlin three-pointer by Irwin with 18 seconds remaining
  • The Yellow Jackets scored three of four points down the stretch on free throws from Vaillant with the last coming with 15 seconds remaining
  • The Yeowomen tied the game at 63 on a Jefferson layup with seven seconds left
  • BW outshot Oberlin 50.0 percent to 33.3 percent from the field
  • The Yeowomen won the rebound battle by a 5-4 margin

Double Overtime (OC, 69-65)

  • Oberlin got a three-pointer from sophomore guard Lily Najmulski to go up 68-65 with 2:48
  • The Yeowomen split a pair of free throws by Kumler with five seconds remaining for the final points
  • Oberlin got a block from Zinaich on a Yellow Jacket three-pointer with one second remaining
  • The Yeowomen outshot BW 33.3 percent to 16.7 percent from the field

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 2 when they travel to New Concord for their OAC opener against Muskingum University on Performance Court inside the Anne C. Steele Center at 2 p.m.
