No. 14 Women’s Basketball Claims OAC Victory Over Heidelberg

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 14 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Heidelberg University by a final score of 66-42 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

Senior Academic All-OAC forward Megan Scheibelhut (Avon Lake/Elyria Catholic) led the Yellow Jackets (12-3, 9-1 OAC) as she notched a career-high and game-high of 17 points and added four rebounds. Scheibelhut went 3-3 from distance and went 7-8 all together from the floor tonight. Adding 11 points and four rebounds was sophomore forward Sylvie Sonneman (Jamestown/Greenview). Sophomore forward Kira Philpot (Cuyahoga Falls/Stow) neared a double-double as she earned eight points and nine rebounds. 

The game kicked off with BW taking a quick 5-0 lead over Heidelberg (3-14, 2-8 OAC). After three minutes of play, the Yellow Jackets got hot with an eight-point streak and ended the first quarter leading 16-7. The second quarter was scoreless for three minutes until Scheibelhut found the basket with a three-point jump shot. The Student Princes fought back, creating some back-and-forth action towards the end of the half, but the Yellow Jackets were resilient and went into the half with a 22-point lead (33-11). 

Senior First Team All-OAC performer and Academic All-OAC forward Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) got the scoring kicked off in the second half, grabbing an early free throw. Sonneman got into a groove in the third quarter, as she hit three 3-point jump shots, sending the Yellow Jackets into the final quarter with a 28-point lead. The Heidelberg offense chipped away at BW's lead throughout the fourth quarter, outscoring BW 14-12. However, the Yellow Jackets claimed the victory in the end with a final score of 66-42.

Heidelberg was led by freshman guard Hallie Rogers with 10 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Junior guard Lily Sweeney contributed seven points and two rebounds.

Edwards finished the game with seven points, three rebounds, and two assists. Junior Academic All-OAC guard Regan Schill (Sheffeild Village/Elyria Catholic) posted a pair of buckets, two steals, two assists, and three boards.

The Yellow Jackets return to the court on Saturday, January 29 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio to take on the No. 19 Marietta Pioneers in a huge OAC showdown at 1:00 p.m. in Ban Johnson Arena.
