WOOSTER, Ohio – Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) was named Most Valuable Player as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team won the Nan Nichols Classic after a decisive 82-47 victory over host The College of Wooster.

Junior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) led all scorers with 15 points while senior Academic All-OAC guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/Fairview) added 14 points of her own. Fecht grabbed six boards to lead the rebounding corps.

Following the game, Fecht and Smith were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts over the weekend. Fecht averaged 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game over the tournament along with recording her first double-double of the season against Hanover (Ind.) College. Smith averaged 15.5 points per game and shot 11-of-19 from the floor, including 6-of-11 from the three-point line.

After trading buckets for most of the first quarter, Womeldorf sparked a 7-0 run when she made a layup with 3:22 remaining in the first quarter, forcing Wooster to take a timeout down 14-7. The Fighting Scots came out of the timeout and made a layup but still trailed by five points at the end of the first period.

BW opened up the second quarter on an 8-0 run thanks to three-pointers by sophomore guard/forward Kara Marshall (Copley/Akron Archbishop Hoban) and Smith, taking a 22-9 lead at the 8:03 mark. The Yellow Jackets were able to maintain a double-digit advantage for much of the quarter. Marshall tied her career-high for points in a single game with seven when she hit two free throws with 11 seconds left in the half.

Three-pointers became the theme coming out of the locker room after halftime as the Yellow Jackets saw five different players hit from downtown in the third quarter. A three by sophomore guard MacKenzi Matthews (North Royalton) gave BW its first 20-point lead of the season, up 53-33 with 3:51 remaining in the quarter. The Yellow Jackets continued to build up the lead and entered into the final period with a 65-37 advantage.

Defense was the tone of the fourth quarter as the Yellow Jackets held the Fighting Scots to only 10 points in the final 10 minutes.

The Yellow Jackets will be back on the court after the holiday when they travel to Oberlin for a non-conference game with Oberlin College on Sunday, Nov. 26, at 3 p.m. inside Phillips Gymnasium.
