Women’s Basketball Holds Off Loras to Win BW Holiday Invitational

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team won the BW Holiday Invitational with a 72-60 victory over Loras (Iowa) College in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (11-0) had two players score in double figures led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg), who was named the Most Valuable Player of the invitational, as she scored a game-high 19 points. Sophomore guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) earned all-tournament honors and added 11.

Loras College (6-6) was led by senior forward Terese McMahon who scored a team-high 18 points and senior forward Lori Obendorf as she contributed 17 points.  

The Yellow Jackets went on a 10-0 run to open the game when senior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) made a layup through the lane at the 7:34 mark. The Duhawks answered with a 6-2 run to cut the BW lead to 12-6 when Obendorf made both free throws with 5:16 left in the quarter. The Yellow Jackets outscored Loras 6-1 to close out the stanza and extend their lead to 18-7.

In the second quarter, freshman guard Kasey Hughes (Springsboro) capped off a 7-2 run to extend the BW lead to 26-9 at the 6:25 mark.  The Duhawks went on a 14-8 run to close out the half and cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 34-23 at the intermission.

In the first five minutes of the third quarter each team scored six points before BW went on a 8-4 run capped off by a made three pointer by Fecht to make the score 48-33 at the 1:38 mark. Loras outscored the Yellow Jackets 4-2 in the final minute to cut the 50-37 going into the final frame.

After a Colombo three to open the fourth quarter, junior guard Addie Obberman capped off a 5-0 run for the Duhawks to cut the BW lead to 53-42 at the 8:39 mark. The Yellow Jackets extended its lead to 66-48 with a 13-6 run capped off by another Fecht three pointer. Loras answered with eight unanswered points to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 66-56 when Obberman made a three at the 2:51 mark. BW outscored the Duhawks 6-4 down the stretch to hold on for the victory.

The Yellow Jackets back in action on Wednesday, January 4 when they return to OAC play when it hosts the University of Mount Union in a rematch of the OAC tournament championship game a year ago inside the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
